It may be different now, but last year when I was pg I was told that they don't get paid for your care until 14 weeks (or maybe 12, can't really remember now). That doesn't mean that they will only see you once, just means they don't get paid as they're not your LMC until then. emz - I was told the midwife is funded from the first vist regardless of how many weeks you are. I would do it now! Some midwives get booked up really quickly, and if u already have an idea of who u want it will take some of the stress away too. Like someone else said, they will prob be happy to chat to you on the phone, but it may be un likely that they will have time to meet you in person. Mrs_B - I think it is good to be organised. It will not hurt to do your research now but I would hold off the interview process until you get your BFP. I'm not really one to talk because i have never been through the process and only currently TTC. I know that some people do have a problem finding one, especially one that they like. I think as soon as you get a BFP start booking interviews from your short list. That is what I'm going to do. PS. Most won't actually like being "interviewed" in person anyway, esp while TTC. Yeah I would have to agree with Emz.

The first thing my midwife asked me on the phone was "When are you Due" so if you say Im not pregnant, they may wonder why you are calling, just cos they are very busy people and probably dont have the time to see someone unless they are actually pregnant...

I would hold off until you are pregnant, as long as you call them as soon as you find out you are, then you will be fine. I mean you could find one you like now and then when you fall pregnant find out she isnt available anyways...so best to wait..

It doesn't hurt to call around now and make a shortlist of midwifes.  Definitely make sure you choose a few who you'd like so that once you do get BFP if the first choice is unavailable you have back ups.

I already know who I want to use (same mw as last time) and she'll be one of the first people to know when I do get pregnant again because I want to make sure I get her.

eta: many midwives have websites, maybe start there to match your birth philiosophy to theirs rather than actually interviewing them in person and talk to friends and ladies on here about their midwives and whether they'd recommend anyone to you.

m/w don't get funded until you're 14 weeks except for one initial meeting, so I don't think with them being so busy they would be incredibly happy spending the time with someone who isn't even TTC (no offense). Sounds like a good idea to me, but the midwives might not be so keen... They are busy ladies!!

BUT I reckon it would be worth a try!  and YES way way too organised!

Good midwives seem in high demand so I was thinking about "interviewing" some midwives now to save time, so when I do get pregnant I can just call them up without having to go through trying to find one I like! We are currently preparing to TTC with the intetion of starting in August.
