Trying to recall my siblings kids. They all had three kids.

Sibling 1. First was biggest, last was the smallest.
Sibling 2. First was biggest, can't remember who was smallest.
Sibling 3. First was biggest
Sibling 4. Second was biggest.

DS1 was 7lb exactly, 3hr 56 min from start to finish (1 hour pushing)

DS2 was 8lb 7oz, 2 hours start to finish (9 minutes of pushing)

DS2 was the way easier labour and birth and the complete opposite of DS1. DS2 had a larger head than his big brother and though they were both super fast I enjoyed the 2nd one much better (maybe because I was at home).

SarahMM-They say that the average first labour is 18-24 hours long. When I got to hospital with DS1 they were going to transfer me off the delivery suite because they insisted I wasn't actually in labour....then my waters kindly broke and I had to stay put. LOL

Active labour is classed as contractions that get longer, stronger and more frequent. This stage can take, on average, of 4-8 hours for first time babies, this is when you have to get from 4cm to 10 cm. When I had DS1 and my waters broke I was already at 6! The other thing you will probably notice is an inability to talk through your contractions. This was pretty instantaneous for me both times and I can tell you that I would pick an 8ish hour labour over my quick ones anyday.

How long you push for varies from woman to woman and labour to labour. I guess it depends on how motivated you are. LOL With DS1 I had NO idea what I was doing so it took an hour, probably at least 15 minutes longer than it needed to because as soon as I got to the "ring of fire" I stopped pushing. I had to be threatened with an episiotomy to keep me motivated as I didn't want one. DS2 took all of 9 minutes and as he was a water birth I didn't even realise he had crowned until dp mentioned something about alot of hair and the midwife said it was bubs. LOL

Just go in with an open mind, visualise everything going well and it should. I think that the fear that alot of women these days seem to have about giving birth impedes the natural process. Questions from a first timer..... where do they draw the line between "pre-labour" and "active labour"? How do they decide which stage you are in?

I'm wondering what the average length of a typical first labour and birth would be? All you guys on here seem to have gone very fast!

BTW - I was 8 pd and took 27 hrs, my brother was 9 pd and took 5 hrs. I've got a joyous first labour to look forward to if labour time is heriditary!

baby #1 10lbs, 13 hours active labour with 2 hrs pushing, E c-sect after all that.

baby #2 8lb 6oz, 10 hours active labour with 5mins pushing, easiest birth!!

baby #3 7lbs 4oz, 17 hours active labour with just under 4 hours pushing as he turned his head in the birth canal and the MW had to manual turn it back which took bloody forever (I tried to kick her in the head while this was happening lol) Once turned he came out in 2 pushes. Poor boy also had the cord around his neck twice so I guess it was sort of a buggy type situation too. His was a harder birth than the others.

Baby 1. 7lb 3oz
Baby 2. 8lb 4oz - much much quicker and easier than first.

I think the second time is going to be easier, in that you know what you are in for. I went in really positive, knew I could do it, as I had done it before. Although my labour was a lot quicker any way, so it was never going to be a hard labour. I think a lot of how your labour goes (excpet for when there is a medical problem) is how you feel about it. I had a friend who went into her second labour very negative after a bad first birth. Jack 39+6 7lb 4oz Its hard to say how long established labour was but i'm going for about 16hours maybe? 45 mins pushing
Caprece 39+4 7lb 7oz 6 hours established labour. I know thats not as fast as some but man it was way more intense and I felt really out of control. I pushed once and it broke my waters and second push she was out. I went into shock after as well, I was shaking and just felt really weird.

Jacks head was 2cm bigger than Capreces tho.

I'd second that. With Briona I went into transition very quickly after ARM (artificial rupture) and panicked. DD1 - induced 38 weeks - 7lb 2oz and approx 2hrs labour

DD2 - spontaneous labour at 41 weeks 3 days - 8lb 7oz and 50 minutes labour (several hours of pre-labour before this, though).

I went into shock after my first birth too, it was so fast! Second was faster but I was prepared it could go that way. Oh and the gremlins were definitely easier to birth, even tho they were induced. I think most of that was coz I was more prepared for what to expect, and I went into it more optimistic. Maya was 9lb1oz at 38 weeks, 17 hours of clinical labour, 2 days of latent first stage.
Gremlins were 6lb8oz and 7lb1oz at 36 weeks, 6 hours from start to finish.

Rico was born 39 weeks, 27 hr labour, weighed 8lb 15oz. Pushed for one hour before he was turned and pulled out with forceps.

Gia was born 39 weeks, 21 hrs labour, weighed 8lb 8oz. Pushed for 30 mins.

Jett was born 40 weeks, 12.5 hrs labour, weighed 8lb 11oz. Pushed twice and his head came out, then one more push for the shoulders. Coughed and the placenta came out.

I've had three babies, all punctual!

#1 7lb 3oz, things went wrong mid-labour and was a c/s
#2 8lb 4oz from ARM to birth was about 2 1/2 hours
#3 8lb 0oz from ARM to birth was about 1 hour

They say that the first stage of labour varies depending on the baby and the second stage of labour gets quicker each time - certainly true in my case.

You guys are all quoting active labour hours, aren't you? My early labour stage with Briona was 30+ hours

My active labour was only 3 hours and it took 2 hours to go from 4cm to fully dilated, I went into shock too (not medically speaking, more that I became totally detached from the situation IYKWIM).

1st baby, 38 weeks, 7lb 3oz, 5 hour labour, (2hours pushing)

2nd baby, 37.5 weeks, 6lb 2oz, 3.5 hr labour, (10 mins to get from 7cm to 10cm, and another 10 mins to push)

2nd baby you dilate and efface at the same time so yes, your body is more effective at doing 2 things at once, hence pushing tends to be much quicker.. that and everything's already streched and buggered anyway

Ok, so here's mine

1. 8lb 12oz (at 40+6) - 26 hours from first contraction to birth

2. 8lb 4oz (at 39 weeks) - 4 3/4 hours from first contraction to birth

So my second was sooo much quicker and easier but smaller and earlier.

#2 9lb 6oz - 80 minute labour

The second time it took a while to get going though, was having mild contractions that wernt really doing anything for 5 hours but once it started it went really fast.

If its true that they get bigger and faster I'm definately not having any more!!!... So the labour getting taking less time each birth did ring true for you? Awesome.
I had a 17 hour last time, which isn't too bad for a first time birth I suppose, I wouldn't mind if it went down to 9 or 10 hours this time.

A friend of mine was only in labour for an hour with her first, apparently it was awful and she went into shock afterwards.

my 4th was my easiest too, but then it was my 1st non-indcued labour so i have put it down to that, my others were great labours too but slightly more intense i guess...
BUT in saying that it was the hardest to push out maybe cause it was the biggest? or because after the inductions and them being slightly more painful i had a harder time accepting that it was real!! i swear i didnt feel labour the same, was too easy.

My mum had 4 babies:

#1 7lb 2oz 1.5 hour labour
#2 7lb 5oz 30 min labour
#3 6lb 10oz 8 hour labour
#4 8lb 9oz 4 hour labour

I was her smallest baby but also the hardest labour. The first labour happened really quick. Second time around she wasn't pinning hopes on another quick labour but as it happened she almost didn't make it to the hospital, she started pushing basically as soon as she got there. By the 3rd time she was quite confident that she would have another quick labour but I decided not to play by her rules (which just goes to show I've been stubborn since before I was even born). When things didn't happen as she'd expected she started stressing out and getting worried which made things worse for her.

My younger sister was the biggest baby (with the biggest head) but mum said she was actually to easiest labour. I've heard from a bunch of different people/places that babies tend to get bigger each time.

I'm just curious, has that been true or false for other people?

My first was 8lb 11, and I'm not too worried about having a bigger baby, long as they're healthy enough (I mean, it's going to hurt no matter what, right?). Head size...well that's another story, lol.

Another is that labour/birth gets quicker each time, which I kinda believe since it's been true most people I've known.

Just wondering if there is any substantial truth to them.
