It's rather odd really. She seems like a pretty angry and / or sad person and the way she uses language does get in the way of interpreting what the message actually is.

I can't help but admit I'm finding it slightly entertaining but I'm also hoping no one has been upset or hurt by some of it!

Mindi you seem to be accusing us of making assumptions when you seem to be making a lot yourself about the women who post on this site. If you have a look at the other threads on OhBaby you will see what a supportive lot these women are. I would kindly suggest that you have no idea what degree of humour or life experience the other posters here have because you haven't really taken the time to post and get to know people in a more gentle manner. I rarely post these days but I feel I have to jump in in defense of what I see as a largely supportive community of parents on this site.

I may be speaking out of turn but I think people are simply reacting to the fact that you seem to have very, very strong opinions that you are pushing upon us without knowing anything about us. I think we all cope relatively well with differing opinions as long as it is in the context of good, healthy debate rather than one person forcing their opinion and judgements on others.

Hi,    as the topic of abortion has been brought up here by others....

facts18,000 life's snuffed out IN NZ alone each yr at will of another the mother, or forced bu pressure of relatives very unfair,
aprox 400,000 and more have been aborted in NZ alone

Some believe its just about themselves, and how they feel? it is simply tricking yourself in think just having a abortion make things go away for you? most know thats not true, and others feel deeply for the lies the abortions push on to unsuspecting young and mostly scared victims, then there the dead babies most victimized.

10 weeks, Brains Hearst that beat and all potential make up there Denial can be a strong drug if you feel just because you cannot see it physically. but you can still feel it 100%.

Also not all babies fathered had bad fathers, some time girls / woman make mistake yes, but should be held accountable and grow up taking care of what they have been one part of created a human life, what about allowing fathers to father is this not their choice in NZ it is? and just think of the chance you give your own flesh and blood to be a potentially productive human being. Surely better to give a life a chance?

I applaud those who have made mistakes and learned about the facts of life the hard way by causal sex or just aborting unwanted babies/ potential children, who has not made mistakes in life or wrong or   bad choices? but for the ones that do not care to take proper precautions and treat sex as just recreation without the procreation responsibility don't understand that mind set, sorry cannot sympathize with that.

Life no mater how old, is not to be seen as a inconvenient thing, to be snuffed away at will. As all life is Sacred, sad for all who think they have the power to do so.

I started looking seriously pregnant at about 5.5 months. Between 5 months and 5.5 months I seriously popped so I only had a small bump at 5 months and a lot of people didn't notice it. Also Some people classify themselves as 5 months pregnant at 20 weeks, although it's really only 4.5 months. assuming the couple DID know the waitress was pregnant (I had a very obvious bump at 5mo) - I think it's seriously wrong that they could even consider that someone would want to give up their baby. At 5mo it's highly likely she's not going to have an abortion so wouldn't you assume she wants the baby??

Spoke to my mum to ensure my comment re the 9 adoptions was correct. And it was. Perhaps the others were private arrangements/whangai or something. Didn't include inter-country though, and there are quite a few of them each year

Yeah, those stories were awful weren't they! I couldn't believe people would actually do things like that and I'm glad I haven't heard of cases like that in New Zealand. At the time I was dealing with fertility issues of my own and feeling super sensitive to preggie women, but I still couldn't understand how they could do that.

I agree though, pregnancy and oversensitivity do seem to go hand in hand. When I was pregnant there were a few cases of baby snatching when a heavily pregnant women was kidnapped, the baby cut out of her stomach and the woman left to die (in one case the womans 2yo alerted police as her mummy lay drugged and bleeding profusely - twas awful). Anyway I was deathly scared that someone would try and steal my baby straight from my womb

You misunderstood me. They might not have even known the waitress was pregnant and they may not have been targetting her. They may have simply been leaving the cards at random places for people to pick up and pass along to someone they know is pregnant. Just because that waitress was pregnant, doesn't necessarily assume they were referring to her baby. I think deciding whether to keep your baby or is a very personal and individual choice and can only be made by the mother.

When I was 19 with an unplanned baby the dr didn't even mention not keeping it, she was so excited it was kinda weird.

Also you have to think a termination is a lot less risky than a pregnancy IYGWIM not to sound mean or anything but there are a lot of risks (and discomforts) to go with pregnancy that I don't think I could put myself through just to hand the baby over. I think anyway who has had a termination has some form of guilt over it so why make them feel even worse by going on about how they should all be adopting them out.

Im very glad now that if it came to it and i got pregnant i wouldn't have to choose, i could keep it , i just wont have as many as the Duggar family ....though it could be quite fun , choosing a letter and naming them all ......ANYWAY , one good thing that came out of my termination was when i got pregnant with Caitlyn a year later ( I never learn :-P ) i knew i never wanted to terminate again and if anything it gave me the courage to stand up to everyone who was opposed to me keeping her ...
You know my uncle offered to pay for a private abortion when i was 20weeks (and not for my sake-for the family name) it took all the restraint i had not to tell him to eff off -only cos i was trying to prove i was "mature" ....

My sis was asked recently why she's pro-life and she responded that she'd had been offered terminations in her first tri with Elizabeth and her 2nd tri with Joshua and had she aceepted them her life now would be empty and that's why she's pro life.

yeah personally i get you -but i can also say from my own experience (as in it mightnt be the case for everyone) that a termination is physically over and done with , but isnt ever emotionally over and done with .
Of course i didnt know that at the time, the main reason for me was i was too selfish to adopt .

I had an abortion when i was 18 and I acknowledge it , and live with my guilt everyday.
I admire people who give up their babies for adoption so much, i was just not strong enough to do it -it wasnt the birth that worried me , it was the handing the baby i had grown over to someone else that i was scared of.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Heaps of people advertise in baby magazines etc for adoption or more commonly, egg donation. I guess that couple were just leaving as many cards around as possible so that someone might know someone, and that's all they meant by it.

I am totally shocked at the abortion vs adoption stats!! Everything I've heard from or of people in FP etc tells me that they give a lot of "both sides" advice. However I think among the general public, abortion is still more commonly accepted because it has a firmer "end" to it, to the biological parents. I was wondering whether the 9 adoptions was just the central region.

Back to the original post however. I was wondering whether the couple just randomly left cards everywhere so that people would pass them on. If the woman was 5 months pregnant they may not have realised she was pregnant and it may not have been targetted specifically at her. Nikki - the discrepancy could probably be that some adoptions are privately arranged or "whangai" arrangements? I'm not sure.

20 seems awfully low but I do know that the number of adoptions has definitely been decreasing.

As the article has said, the increase in social welfare and ease of access to terminations.

I consider the access to terminations a good thing but not the increase in number. I would prefer it if there were no unplanned pregnancies in the first place! I know that I would have suffered a whoooole lot less trauma if I had been able to choose the timing of my pregnancy. That'll teach me for having sex huh?.... or not.

I think there's probably been a bit of a turnaround in recent years.

Hmm, I think that is a really risky thing to do, to assume that a young pregnant woman would be interested in adopting her child to you. So many women could be really offended by that. It is really heartbreaking that the couple are that desperate though.


RE: Abortion promotion
When I was first pregnant with Ella I went to an A&E to get the pregnancy confirmed and was given a long talk about the process of termination because I said that the pregnancy was unplanned.
Then when I went for the dating scan a few days later the sonographer took me aside on my way to the toilet afterward and gave me a similar talk.

I did use abortion instead of adoption so I TOTALLY get that. I didn't think I could deal with the thought that my "baby" was out there and I had abandoned her. I felt that terminating when I did was more of an elimination of the "what if"

Family planning's official line is not to encourage one over the other but to present options. I have talked with the Chief Exec on this quite a bit.

When my little sis (who was 17) got pregnant I took her to family planning to have her HPT confirmed and when she got BFP there the first thing the woman suggested was abortion as if at 17yo my sis had no other options.

Mind you that was 8.5 years ago and just one woman so I guess 'encouraged' isn't the right word to use although the point I was trying to get across is that it does seem that many women who have unplanned pregnancies use abortion instead of adoption.

I think it's so presumptious of them to assume that a pregnant waitress may want/need to adopt out a baby (IMO it assumes that she isn't in a steady relationship and that the pregnancy is unplanned or unwanted). If I were her I'd be very angry.

But then at the same time I really feel for this couple who are obviously very desperate to have a child of their own.

I think it's sad that abortion is encouraged instead of adoption nowadays and people who can't have their own children are driven to try desperate measures to find a baby for adoption while others can nonchalantly get knocked up and terminate.
