In fact i was so convinced we had to have it that I went out & got it regardless of the fact that dh was questioning it from the start.

All I can say is I personally did have peace of mind when Ethan slept on it but we have taken it off his bed when he was about 5mths old because it was causing almost a sweat effect & often I'd get him out of bed smelling damp at the back of his head.. this went on for a while then i realised it was probably the darn plastic wrap around the mattress..so off it went.. I'm not sure what it was supposed to do be honest but it certainly did contradict everything we had been told to date about only ever using natural fibres to sleep baby on etc.. Others swear by it but I have noticed a marked improvement in ethans sleep since we took it off & there isn't that manky smell anymore either

Personally I felt a bit ripped off as it's just plastic with holes in one side for the mattress to breathe. It was cold so had to put a blanket on top/under the sheet. And it can't have been comfortable to sleep on. We don't have one on the cot mattress as it was brand new.

I think there are a lot of products out there that make mothers feel like they are "bad" if they don't have that particular product.

Personal choice, I reckon. If it will make you feel better, get one. But I agree, it is contradictive to the natural fibres thing.

Edited by sunnyhoney

I would suggest that THAT is the main reason for the low SIDS rate. My med student friend says that most older Drs feel awful because they used to recommend babies sleep on their tummies, but now they know that they are responsible for losing thousands of little lives because they gave the wrong advice :S How awful would that feel.

I've never used one, but it's a personal choice. We had a new mattress though, so it had never been shared with another baby or anything (don't know if that matters).

Edited by Janey77

    Author: cherryred77
Subject: 17334
Posted: 17 May 2008 at 10:49pm

Hi I'm from the UK and was just after some help from some NZ mums..I saw an article about mattress wrapping on the net ( putting a special wrap over the babies mattress before the sheets etc) and in the article they claim that the reason cot death has dropped so dramatically in NZ is because so many mums have wrapped their baby's mattress.
Of course I thought great I'll get one for my baby, but when I have looked on any NZ websites there is no mention of mums doing this, just following the same rules as we do here e.g avoid smoking round baby, put baby on back etc etc.... So can anyone tell me is this common practise in NZ or someone exagerating their product ...Thanks for your time x
