I agree with the others, don't get a dog unless you want a dog to be part of the family and not just for security.

We had two big dogs (one was a mastiff cross - big big dog) and we got broken into. They were both inside the house and the rotton b*stard feed them!!!

Luckily we didn't have anything he wanted (apart from about $5 worth of Fijian money - haha *devil laugh*) and the police caught him and did him for over 100 burglaries!!!

I wouldn't get a dog just as an attempt to stop burgulars, its not fair on the dog.
You would be better off to stick a cctv camera on the front of your house and put in a burglar alarm as thats a one off payment. Speaking from experience there's nothing more frustrating than having a neighbour who has a dog chained up in the garden all day long.
Poor wee thing was bored stiff and would bark for hours in the wee hours of the morning.

I agree, don't get a dog just for security reasons.
They're costly, need constant attention and exercise(my poor girl's getting a bit porky).

Having said that, I do feel a lot safer with her around.
However, she's a Dalmatian, so when you actually see who the bark belongs to, it's no longer scary
I find the people who are scared of dogs just stand at the gate and call out to get my attention.

It costs us about $40 a month to feed Phoebe. $120-ish for registration and a good $150 anually for vet costs (plus kennels for when we go away for weekends etc..).
So an alarm system would be the way to go

If you ring your local council they might be able to point you in the right direction of who runs neighbourhood support in your town/area. Councils generally give money to neighbourhood support to keep it going so they should know a contact person.

Instead of a dog. Just get a couple of Beware of Dog signs for gates lol. Some people might think that is a good deterrant on its own as many dog owners don't have them but the ones that do generally have a good reason for having them. In regards to the alarm, try ringing your insurance company. Most have some kind of deal set up with a preferred alarm company. Yeah I totally wouldn't recommend getting a dog if you're not a dog person - they're expensive and time consuming, and plus it's not really fair on the dog either. Hence why I'd never get a cat!! Lol, yeah I'm not much of a cat person. We've considered getting a dog but only for family recreation reasons, not jump at every stranger reasons! We've decided to put it off at least until our budget is easier. Try ADT. We have an alarm and it includes monitoring for break-ins, fire and home invasion. not sure about a neighbourhood watch the first time our neighbour heard the windows smash and called the police.

alot of our neighbours English isn't their first language.

Sorry to hear about your place being broken into.
If you're not a dog person and you don't want the only reason to be to keep burglars out then don't get one, JMHO
We have two dogs and they're awesome. Yes, they do deter people (not an issue now that we're in the country) but as you are aware - they are a big commitment. They definitely increase your food bill! They need to be registered and vaccinated every year and they need exercise every day.

A burglar alarm might be worth a shot? as some of you know we had a couple of break ins.

someone mentioned it might be an idea to get a dog..however I am not a dog person and well they cost money to feed let alone vets bills registration and taking them for walks etc.
