Makes perfect sense - thanks heaps. Oliver drinks anywhere from 80mls to 140mls per feed, really depends on him though! I try really hard to ensure he at least drinks 100 to 120mls, but sometimes he just falls asleep and no matter what you do he won't drink more!

Will just leave it up to him at this stage then.

Josh is drinking 220ml every 2-3 hours and sometimes once in the night but he has dropped that again. All babies are different as to how much and how often they want to be fed. If you want to try and move the feeds further apart increase the amount you are feeding him at each feed i know it works for some people just not my boy. Otherwise when he is a bit older and you visit plunket they may suggest a hungry baby formula if he still drinking really often.

At his age id probably just stick with how its going now and wait till after 6-8 weeks before trying to draw feeds out or anything. You will find the feeds will get closer together during growth spurts when babies need more.

Hi guys

My son is totally formula fed, and is 4 weeks old. He is currently feeding pretty much every 3 hours, except for once during the night where he can go anywhere from 4 to 5 hours. Can anyone advise when he is likely to move to longer between feeds? Is this something I should be trying to do for him - ie hold him off for feeds, or will he do it all by himself?

KA no I just buy the karicare HA from the supermarket, its more expensive than the normal one of course and I guess if you could get it on prescription then it would be cheaper, but I don't know if that's possible.

I just really wanted one that was suitable for our needs that I could find readily at any supermarket.

My GP told me not to swap regularly ala don't just pick up whats on special. He said that you do need to trial different formulas to see which one is right for your bubs as they all have a different make up. So it's fine to use one and if you find it has a bad side effect like wind and constipation - you can switch and trial another for a few weeks to see if this improves.

In Daniels case we tried Karicare, instant horrible wind that was painful for him. As soon as we stopped and switched to Nurture the wind stopped but after a week or so he got constipated. After dealing with that for a couple of months we switched to S26 and haven't had any probs whatsoever.

It's fine to swap and change like we did according to my lovely GP as it's better to change if you have bad side effects rather than keeping with the same one when another one on the market might suit bubba better

Is it just 'cos of the possibility of their tums getting upset that they reccommend you don't chop and change? I use karicare HA for Gabs, it is a hypo allergenic one as I get dermatitis so its supposed to help reduce the risk of allergies for her.

She did power vomit for a while and she does sometimes have wind issues but the power vommiting has pretty much stopped now and the wind is getting better, so I have put that down to her digestive system gettting more mature now. She never really screamed because of wind though.

I never contemplated changing formula to improve her wind, I just never thought of it and I was also told not to chop and change, stick to one formula unless there are major issues with it.

peachy thats cool:) just wondered.... goats milk no good for Ethan cause of his allergy but i remember now we covered that Lauren is allergic to the apples isnt she. did you get put on probiotics after your c section? i know it helps less children have allergies and is to give them the good bacteria they miss in a c-section.. i think its useful for reflux etc(but i just wondered if anyone has been offered it besides those with allergies)..the allergy doc i go to has just bought out a new book on excema...seems really good.. Soory KA, I use number 2 teats with Advent bottles and 3-6 months with my Tommee Tippee bottles. I use both kinds of bottles aswell as b/f.

I have only just moved on from number one teats to number two teats... Chloe can't handle fast milk flow very well. Plus the Plunket Nurse told me that it's more like breastfeeding if they have to work at it a bit anyway, so I was using number one teats while I was breastfeeding and bottlefeeding at the same time.


Arohanui, if you give half and half EBM and formula, I definitely don't think you have anything to feel guilty about, that's only like 1 whole bottle of formula in the day that you are working. And he will still be getting all the good stuff from the breast milk. Breast IS best, but you aren't planning on taking that away from him, so I don't think you should feel guilty in the least. peachy there are only the 0-3 3-6 and 6 plus in the Tommee Tippee I use..so you use the first one....i mixed up the new teats with old and it doesnt happen with the old teats but it takes forever to feed him and he gets sick of it,..cant win:(

KA, Lauren is only on one bottle of formula per day but she is still on the number 2 teats. I think most of us in the Oct thread are still using number 2 teats as they are fast enough.

Regarding formula, I am still b/f apart from one bottle per day of formula. I have chosen to use Goats Milk formula, which is expensive but I was wanting to use one that would reduce the chance of excema flare ups and it seems to be o.k.

I actually find giving Lauren one bottle per day gives me a huge break from b/f. I rotate around at what time I give her the formula feed, generally its the late afternoon feed as that is when my milk is low and my let down takes for ever. Then I have a good supply again for her last evening feed around 6 or 7pm.

Sorry rambled on a bit there, but just giving you an idea what is working for us! That's a good idea Janey, about the half half. I expressed this morning after the first morning feed and got all of 40mls Hopefully with continued expressing my supply will increase so I can express more.

I don't know why but I feel so bad about possibly going onto a couple of bottles of formula a week. Probably because it's so drummed into us that breast is best

KA, yeah it could be the new 3+ teats. If it was me I'd probably switch back to the old teats for a few days to see if it makes a difference (although if he was getting frustrated at the speed the milk was coming out, I'd change back to 3+ pretty quick). We tried Karicare but it was horrible for Chloe, she got so windy and upset with it, and it didn't help her spilling at all. Not sure if it's because it goes so frothy when you shake it? Anyway we are on the Heinz Nuture one now, and she doesn't seem to have any problems with it. She's still quite spilly but less so, she always has been quite spilly, and haven't been able to find AR tins of formula around around. We haven't had a problem with constipation or anything.

We use the Karicare AR cos the plunket nurse told me to use a hungry baby formula with Josh and Karicare dont do one and thinkened sounded like a similar idea but it really helped with his spilling he hardly ever does now.

He is really windy out his bum but he always has been a farter i never really thought about it hurting him tho i spose sometimes he does cry and fart hmm dunno. Yeah i can hear the wind slosh around in his tummy before i burp him hehehe. It doesnt really seem to bother him most the time but every now and then we give him gripe water if he gets upset. We use S26 (not gold), first one we tried (can't get satchets in most supermarkets though) and is great. No probs and yeah, supposed to be most like breastmilk. Daniel had silent reflux too, he didn't get spilly either from ranitidine. We were able to wean him off it at around 3-4 months too. His poo has always been a bit different since on formula but we give him prune juice in water every day. His wind appeared almost immediately.. 3rd bottle of karicare. Stacey - we didn't bother with the AR stuff either until she started on the ranitidine and started spilling (her reflux was the silent type). Did you find Daniel's poo started doing 'funny' (ie different to normal) stuff around this time too? Tiff - that sounds like what Daniel had except he had it in the extreme form. Daniel had reflux but we didn't bother with AR formula, we just used the normal stuff. Hmmm, not to thread jack but just lately Rohann (who is onto her second tin of the Karicare AR) has been getting really windy (out her bot bot) and seems quite uncomfortable at times with it. And sometimes you can hear (and even feel) her tummy gurgling and she starts yelling. At first I thought it was the ranitidine she is on for her reflux, but maybe it's the formula???

Karicare works really well for us as Josh was spilly but now he is on the Thickened Formula which is brilliant but since i didnt have many problems i never changed brands so cant comment on the others.

Josh did get constipated in the beginning but i was told to expect that with all formulas as the babies are getting use to them in the first few weeks. He also gets windy sometimes but gripe water has been really good for that.

I have found S-26 Gold great too. I agree about the Karicare- absolute crap (for us anyway). Eden was a very very hungry baby and so is on SMA formula now (fully) it is a heavier formula as apposed to S26 (which Izobel was on fully) and it did cause her to get a little constipated in the beginning, it keeps her fuller for longer than S26 and she isnt constipated anymore, for the constipation i used Coloxyl oral drops.

Now if for any reason she needs to go on another formula (i.e. supply to gisborne is cr*p) she shouldnt get constipated as it isnt as heavy a formula as SMA.

It's trial and error to figure out what will be the best for Harry.. everyone has different opinions on different formulas.

With Daniel though...
Karicare: utter sh*t basically lol.. made him insanely windy, enough to scream blue murder for hours on end
Nurture: no wind issues but made him constipated
S26: what we currently use and have no issues with it. It's apparently the one most like breast milk.

Get a few sachets and try them and see if you get any bad reactions from them. It only took a few feeds of karicare to show the windy side effect. Well we have recently decided that I'm gonna go back to work part time (so we can afford to eat!! lol), it's only gonna be Saturday morning and a few hours one afternoon a week. I'm going to express as much as I can, but with starting soon and not having anything stocked up in the freezer yet I just wanna make sure I have a backup in case there's not enough. DH is going to look at Harry when I'm at work.

So my question is... what is the best formula to use first?

Harry is fully breastfed and I intend to continue this as much as possible, just want formula there for backup. He is quite a spilly baby and does seem quite sensitive (ie getting a rash when I drink orange juice) if this makes a difference.
