This is exaclty what my MW told me. We tried to keep her nappy off as much as poss, but used Zinc and Castor oil cream when needed. We've never used talc here. I have never used talc, just becasue we have no need to.

For nappy rash, we learnt the hard way that Lily was sensitive to zinc based creams so stick solely to Bepanthen. I use J & J talc on Ash but only after a bath, just to make sure I have dried in all her creases. And I shake it onto a bit of sheepskin first. Don't put it on her girly bits, just rub it over her creases. i am only now using powder due to heat...and didnt last summer. OK. So I've been trawling the internet to see what I can find and all there is is hearsay from individuals. There's no actual medical specialists confirming that powder is bad for your daughters.

I did read on wikipedia about talc - the actual mineral made from ground talc rock - is bad (see below) but powders like cornstarch don't actually have talc in them (still looking into curash as the only ingrediant listed on the net is zinc oxide). But as long as you aren't sticking it where it shouldn't be there shouldn't be a problem.

RE: Talc (the mineral which was used in talcum powders in the olden days) Several studies have established preliminary links between talc and pulmonary issues,[2] lung cancer,[3][4] skin cancer and ovarian cancer.[5] This is a major concern considering talc's widespread commercial and household use. In 1993, a US National Toxicology Program report found that cosmetic grade talc caused tumours in animals, even though it contained no asbestos-like fibres.[3] Scientists have been aware of the toxicity of talc since the late 1960s, and in 1971 researchers found particles of talc embedded in 75 percent of the ovarian tumors studied.

Not sure. I never used anything on Elle but we didn't get rashes. I tend to think powder is very drying.

I preferred the cornstarch powder anyway - I'd say it'd be fine to use corn flour. Bah! I used powder at every change with Maya and I'm pretty sure it never did her any harm! It's not like you put the powder INSIDE their girly bits. I even use it on myself when I've got a bit of chafing and I don't appear to have any fertility problems these days

My fave nappy creams are the Karicare Ointment with the red lid, and Bepanthen. We use Bepanthan (sp?) and it has worked a treat - Rowan had terrible nappy rash - blisters and everything - for ages and this was the only thing that worked for her. I heard that as well. If I do use curash I put it on my hand first then just smooth it on her bum, rather than puffing it around. I was told something similar after happily powdering Ella after all changes for about 3 months! Although for me they also said there was a link to cervical cancer

Wow, that's the first time I've heard that and I've used curash on Michaela for nearly 2 years now - she had a really bad nappy rash/thrush as a newborn and curash helped. We now find whenever we switch to creams instead of talc she gets nappy rash again.

I wonder how the talc would travel up there as we don't powder the vaginal opening, just the outer areas.

Interesting that there's no warning on the baby talc bottles if this is true. I just use sudocreme as well. I read in the Jo Frost (Supernanny) that you shouldn't use talc as they breath it in and it could cause problems with their breathing.

As for the nappy rash, the best way to deal with it I have found is to leave their nappy off for a time and use a cream. We haven't had any nappy rash!

I've never really used powder for any of my kids. IF they get a rash I use Cornflour it clears it up so well.

So not sure if theres any truth to what you've been told, hopefully it's not a scare tactic. I always just used the sudocrem on Sam when she was little. Seemed to be fine and is pretty gentle. Got a free sample in the Bounty bag

As for the Talc thing. You shouldn't use talc-based powders on girls, like Curash and J&J regular baby powder, as talc has been found inside ovaries - it works its way in and sits there forever. Not sure of the implications of that but I certainly don't use it on my girl.

What are others thoughts/opinions re this.

I always used curash on the boys but i had also heard something, but wasnt sure what, about powder on girls bums.
