maya.. when he wakes up..esp if he's had 5 hours...i feed him and put him back to be.d.then he drops his dummy and cries (i put it back in, he drops..i put it back in etc) for about 30mins.) so i type on here while I'm waiting.. eventually he alls asleep.. would be easier to have him in bouncer then transfer him but i want him used to his bed at night:) before i wouldnt come online and I'd be falling asleep waiting this keeps me awake:)

Oh yay Kawwww, that is awesome news! Interesting that maybe Ethan has a zinc sensitivity too. In that case just check any future bubba sunscreen ingrediants a some have zinc in them. It is pretty easy to get sinc free ones though, I got ours at the supermarket.

Miconazole is great for the raw skin my 2 got it heaps on their chubby necks and it cleared it up so quick. if youa re regularly using cream and it isnt going, he could be like my LIly - have a sensitivity to zinc based creams. Lily ended up with shocking red raw skin and we kept slathering it on, ended up with a load of thigns fromt eh doc in case it was other infections.

Eventually we ran out of the sudocream, and had been given bepanthen. Within 24 hours of that (and no zinc based creams) it was healing and almost gone.

Hey Rackhell, our girl got thrush only on her bum - three times (two in hospital and once when we got home). She never got any in her mouth (was continuously checked for oral thrush). It was diagnosed by her Paediatrician as thrush (she said babies can get localised in one area only) and mycostatin cream (script required) was the only thing that took it away, we also had nilstat to give her daily for ages just in case she ever got any in her mouth but she never did. I never got any on my nipples either. So I guess we were quite lucky that our girl's thrush was localised.

PS - i think it all depends on where the thrush originates; ie. if the thrush begins on the bottom (like in our case), baby may not end up with oral thrush. If it originated in the mother's nipples or the baby's mouth then it is quite likely to end up right throughout mum and baby's systems.

Nappy rash:

If baby has thrush kind of nappy rash you'll know straightaway as this type of nappy rash is systemic (ie all through system - baby will also have white spots on tongue too).

We slathered daktozin on the bum, and gave cath nilstat (sp?) in liquid form with the dropper, and because I was breastfeeding I had to use nilstat (cream variety) on my nipples too cos her oral thrush gave my nipples thrush!. Talk to doctor as nilstat prescription only.

Michaela gets shocking nappy rash (it sometimes even bleeds) and in the first few weeks even the stuff the md prescribed wouldn't help. Over the past few years we've found some fail safe methods for preventing/treating it. We use:
- lots of curash at every change
- wet cloths instead of baby wipes
- when she has a rash we make up a solution of baking soda and water and wet the cloths in this before cleaning her
- add baking soda to her bath water
- manuka honey is good for getting rid of rashes because of its high antibac properties (slather it straight on to rash - this will sting the first few time)

yea i would say try and have no nappy time as often as u can, (be prepared to go through HEAPS of towels to get rid of it, lol i pretty much covered my lounge floor with cloth nappies so if eden peed then i would just need to put the cloths in the wash.

Make sure u really pat the area dry after every nappy change and bath/shower, i personally would avoid using any talc powder etc on it until it isnt raw skin, but when its healed would start covering the whole area with talc after every nappy change an especially bath/shower, thats the only way i keep edens away.

Luke gets the raw skin thing - I was worried when I first noticed it around 3 weeks old... but everyone has told me not to worry about it. Nappy off time is best, a bit of sun on it and dry it out completely (DH used to blow on him to dry it out). Every now and then it comes back, but clears pretty quick - doesn't seem to bother him either...

If you want to use something on it, powder (after completely dried) or some nappy cream seems to work... you said bout the nappy rash being where his leg meets his groin, are u sure its nappy rash and not raw skin? when Eden was about 1month the mw found a little bit of raw skin, just from when i was bathing her, i wasnt getting that tiny bit dry and it was rubbing away. (can also happen in other creases of skin, underarm, neck, elbows etc)

i use cornflour on Edens rash as well, and it works fantastically.

We used Sudocrem too Kawww and it worked in the beginning but then it stopped and when the doc saw the rash (looked just like nappy rash) she said it was actually thrush infection Apparently there's no difference when the rash is on the bottom except that thrush won't go away with nappyrash creams. We got a script for some Nilstat drops to give Carys orally and it went away. When your at the dr ask for a script of zinc and castor oil, its free and comes in a huge tub and is just as good as anything I've used.

We always have used curash powder. Our little girl hates tummytime so doing tummytime with a nappy off has never really been an option. During the day we use lucas paw paw stuff, but pretty much anything will do during the day as we changed the nappy frequently (big wetter) but at night because she was sleeping through and having the most horrendous nappy rash we apply daktozin before she goes to bed. It's an ointment bought off the shelves at my chemist that gets slathered on and sticks to her skin. Not very attractive, but no nappy rash in the morning either.

Can't remember if Cath startled when she went from being wrapped to a sleepbag, we made up her moses basket as follows cos we didn't get a sleeping bag till she was about four months:

*Take out the mattress, then put cot sheets blankets widthsways in basket ensuring that sides of blankets hang out equally. Make sure that you have the widthways stuff covering the lower half of the basket.

*Put mattress back in, then whatever stuff you put on the mattress for baby to lie on.

*Put baby in.

*Wrap one side of the hanging out blankets over the baby, tuck in, do the same with the other side.

*Your left with a neatly wrapped baby but with a lot of blanket hanging out at the bottom. Cath could still get out this. So I grabbed the excess at the bottom of the basket and instead of folding under the mattress, folded the excess up and on top of her and tucked material down the sides to create a cocoon - that she couldn't wriggle or startle out of. Use Cornflour for his nappy rash. Just sprinkle it on his bottom and do the nappy up. It works wonders.

As for Plunket. They'll only call you for you first visit if your midwife has done the referral. yeah everyone else said that too..she said last time'you can wake him to weigh him but i dont recommend it..its up to you though'... :( im just sad him and i missed out..we dont know his progress..sad for me..he doesnt care he's getting very fat:) as far as plunket she just kept asking me so i assume she thinks they will contact me first....? so i rang i guess she will just tell me to wait till im discharged..im annoyed everything is a week behind and now he will get behind in Plunket too..i hate being late for things:(

Kaww, when my MW came she would weigh him even if he was sleeping.  We would just strip him off and he'd wake she'd do all her bits and then I'd put him back down again.  (mind you I've never had issues with him settling).  My plunket nurse made contact with me the day my mw discharged me.

I agree with the other ladies.. I found no nappy time THE best medicine for nappy rash. a good clean with water/cloth, then lay them on a big old towel or something so you don't have to stress about 'accidents'... specially this lovely weather, he won't get too cold
Then slather the cream on (sudo is great, but also have used the cheap vit e/castor/zinc cream from the supermarket and it's fine too!)
you must be doing really great and that's why the mw not worrying! I BET you're ready for a weigh in for him eh! that was always really exciting for me!!!

cant remember how many btou 7-8 ..i understand plans change but she said thur, then fri...then she would call me and now hes nearly 6 weeks so whats the point:( just feel like im missing what im supposed to have..

the last visit was 2 weeks ago tomorrow.. yeah i forgot to put on the cream and that part has cleared he still has a red patch on side of leg where it meets groin though..is that something i should be concerned bout or just mention to doc on monday?

Re: the nappy cream, there's no harm using it every change. I did when my girls were tiny coz they pooped so often they were prone to nappy rash.

How many home visits have you had from your midwife? well she hasnt seen him really in over 2 weeks as he was asleep last time..so thought she might at least want to check him or look at him or something:( everyone else seems to have had a lot more from their mw's:( 6 week check on monday ..well fri for me at hospital and then monday for both of us and jabs:(

It probably wouldn't hurt to give plunket a ring, also if you just want him weighed then the docs will do that at the 6 week check.

Now firstly i love my mw..after a few issues it went great and she was fab :) anyway she does have a habit of putting people in labour ahead of everyone ;) and so she was supposed to come thur....then fri and rang sat to say she would ring to let me know when she was coming...

anyway i rang her last night to ask if she wanted me to go in(she's been coming to me) and no reply:( Ethan hasnt been weighed since 2.5 weeks cause he was asleep 2 weeks ago when she came:(

so anyway she told me last time Plunket is supposed to have contacted me and they haven't...am i supposed to ring them...or do i just wait? if so how long do i wait..he's 6 weeks on Friday ...?
