Since then I've been giving him kiwifruit most days and yesterday started him on prune juice. And he's just done a great big poo! So I'm putting it down to the prune juice!

I just find there is so much conflicting advice (as with everything baby related!). I'll read something that says give fruit, no fruit, then another only veg, then only orange veg, then introduce green veg????? It's all soooo hard!!!!

But thanks to all of you that have offered a suggestion Fingers crossed he's passed a big hurdle!

Lol Mel!

yeah, that list is what I am following with Lily. it is a lot more limited than a normal diet, but it is designed to avoid allergies.

Lily doesn't eat fruit - she doesn't like it - other than the occasional apricot. pears made her spilly, others she just won't bother with.

Apples are prone to causing bunging up in some babies - raw apple is what is suggested as a food for someone suffering from the runs, so you can see that it could have a similar effect on babies. bananas are notorious for constipation and also are a risk of allerfy through the latex family.

Orange veges are the most easily digested, which is why so much early food is orange in the traditional list (carrots are later in mine due to potential for nitrates, i have actually intoduced them this week).

I reccomend getting kids onto courgette in their foods as it is so watery that it helps with fluids during solids. I also always give water with solids.

We have never (tough wood) had a poo problem.

I'm not sure what made him go, as it had been 7 days since he last went #2's. I've been giving him lactolose & peers with kiwifruit (which probably canceled each other out), then MIL made up vege's with silverbeet in it. So maybe the combo of the lot helped him go. I avoided all fruits yesterday & gave him the homemade vege's. Will try that for the next few days & see if that helps him go more regularly. Of course MIL thought it was her food that made him go.... I think it was more the fact it had been a week & he was bursting to go!

I've never given him baby rice, I don't think their digestive system is ready for rice yet, will try after 6 mths I think, and no cereal yet either. But with his constipation I think I'll avoid rice for quite some time.

(white not reccomended till 2+ years)

9-12 months
fFruit: apples, bananas, berries, grapes, watermelon, dried fruits (sulphur - 2202 - free) citrus
Veges: spinach, beetroot, broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, asparagus, sweet potato corn, egg plant, peppers, tomoato and potato (the last 4 closer to 12 than 9 months)
Grain: gluten grains including oats, barley, basmati rice. (can cause intolerances if introduced too early)
Protein: tofu , chicken, some beans, egg yolk, seeds and nuts if cushed, soy products (milk, yoghurt, cheese) Note that nuts and siy may cause an allergic reaction.

1-2 yrs - strawberries, brown rice, wheat products (small amounts) fish, egg whites, pulses, cows milk.

Wheat and cows milk procuvts can cause intolerance if introduced too early. Egg whites can cause allergic reactions.

I also found this on the same thread about Pears:
Pears have the least amount of salicylates of all fruit, and the riper the fruit is the lower the amount of salicylates. So to test pears you need to buy ripe pears (NOT canned - they use quite unripe fruit and are high in salicylates) and wait till they are really really soft. Then peal them quite thickly (the skin has more salicylates in it than the fruit inside) and cook gently on the stove in water. I would suggest trying this in a month or two and see how baby goes ....

If baby isn't able to handle pears, then hold off on all other fruit for at least a month, if not two. They certainly don't need the nutrition from fruit at this age - remember they get most of their nutrition from bottles/breastfeeds and are only doing solids to get used to the taste and texture. Solids are an investigation time at this age, not a nutrition requirement.
So I was just giving Jett pears as well. But pears are no good either?? Gosh, it's getting more & more limited for him. MIL just made up a lot of vege's with silverbeat, so will just give him that for the meantime, avoid the fruits for a while...

Try prune juice mixed with water. It's what we give Daniel all the time because he has bad constipation. Works like a charm lol
