Dh wants our little girl to have a French, Kiwi and Tahitian name since I am the Kiwi and he is French Tahitian. I just hope we can make the full name sound like it all links together.

My boy is as white as you can get (red hair even lol) and one of his middle names is Maori... Tikihana, after DH's close family friend who passed away a few years ago. Harry does have a bit of Maori blood in him from DH's side of the family, but I think even if he didn't it would still have been cool. I think it's part of being a NZer.

We'll do the same for our next bub (not anytime soon btw lol). If it's a boy his 2nd middle name will be Te Whiwhi after DH's uncle, if it's a girl I like Tahupotiki, which means 'beloved child' cos my middle name Amy means beloved.

Thanks for the suggestion on Maori names, I will keep them all in mind. Main thing is for them to be easy to pronounce as many people are either too shy or unsure how to pronounce them. lilfatty - Ngarangi is a lovely name, and yes it does roll off the tongue!

I don't think it matters if Pakeha kids have Maori names as other cultures often have names that can give a special meaning that English cant give...if that makes sense.

I don't think it really matters.  We have a spanish & italian name for 2 of our kids, yet they're not of that origin.

Willie was keen on a Maori first name for Maya but I didn't want to spend the rest of her life hearing it mispronounced so we went with Maori middle names instead.
Funnily enough I just realised today that if we'd had a boy, his name would have been Luca which is spanish for light, we had a girl and called her Chiara which is Italian for Claire (my sisters name) but literally translated into Italian means light. There is such a thing as too many middle names!

Hi. I'm a school teacher, so see all the possible names. I tell you, with all the double barrelled last names - sometimes the first name doesn't even print properly on the roll. It's embarrassing when you think a kids name is Ne - when actually it's 'Nelly' and the last name is Cooperwaterhouse-wakefield-smith (for example). Keep it simple! Filling out forms with a long name is hard work!

I'm from a pretty pakeha family, but one of my sisters has a Maori name. We grew up in a very Maori area, and I think she got a bit of grief for it at times. But the real problem has been that it has a rolled 'r' in it, and so many members of the family (not to mention school teachers, employers, etc) can't pronounce it. So it does have some downsides. Girls = Aroha (its one of Issys middle names), Kura, Hine, Rihi

Boys = Tane, Tama, Rangi

Kat70, if you're still thinking of short Maori names, how about Maia? Short, easy to spell, and it means "strong". I thought about using it, but DH isn't keen.
In fact, it's still really early for us, but we're finding it hard to agree on any names. Anything I suggest he doesn't seem to like.
The closest we've come is that I think he likes Campbell now (an old family surname I'm fond of), DH thought of making it Campbell Jack (Jack after his father) which could shorten down to CJ (although I like Cam as a nickname!). My DH and I have lists of names we like.  We started discussing baby names long before we started discussing marriage and babies.

DH chose Michaela's first name and her second name (Elizabeth) is after my niece, who's named after my sister who was named after my mums favourite childhood doll.

We were so pleased to find out we were having a girl because Michaela was the only girls name we really liked but we had a few boys names and couldn't agree on one.

The weirdest thing for me was using her name once she was born, it seemed so odd that we had the right to name this perfect little person.  I called her 'baby' or other little nicknames for weeks rather than using her actual name.

Hi everyone

Early days for us at the moment, but my sister is emailing me with suggestions for names (she is fixated on girl even tho we are going to wait to find out!) anyway..there was a talk before about boys names beginning with B, I do like Ben as well - or Benjiman...a friends grandson has just been born and he is a Benjiman but they are moving to Australia so am wondering if choosing Ben is too copycat! anyway - other suggestions of Bailey and Bryn are quite nice (for those who were deciding on B names)   

When it comes closer to our time (end Jan) would anyone have suggestions on short and easy to pronounce Cook Island or Maori Names? my family is a real mixture and I would like to use either in a name; first or middle name (of course this will be discussed with my husband!) I also think it is so important to pronounce peoples names correctly so am veering to classical easy (ish) names.

You type in the names you like and it comes up with suggestions of other names you might like. I found it quite useful for name ideas (but then I like old-fashioned names, might not be so suitable for people who are looking for a 'unique' name)...

DH and I have already decided on a name if it a girl - Antonia Phyllis Kahutaha Maureen. The middle names are from my grandmothers and DH's mother.

But it is a boy, we still haven't decided!!! I love the name Jolyon, but DH doesn't. But at least we know the middle names, as there is a tradition on my father's side of the family, which is Raymond Charles.

Love the names Lea. Kelly, I was lying in bed this morning thinking "hmm, what about Amelia". It's so pretty!

We're struggling with boys names - I feel I can be a bit more adventurous with girls' names, but boys I feel we'll still be a bit traditional. Our surname is also short and starts BR - rules out any names starting with B (there goes Benjamin) or multiple consonants. While i will take DPs opinion seriously , if he vetoes everything i say then he knows the rule, when HE gives birth HE can name it.

Not that im pregnant (Yet!) but im sure next time i'll have a boy, because boys names are what i find hardest , if i have a girl her name will be Amelia Rachel Jade, i've loved the name Amelia since Caitlyn was 1, but thought it too cruel to change her name

I found it very difficult to choose DD name. I wanted some thing that was Indian and yet not too difficult for others to pronounce!

I had a list of names I liked and sat down with DH and read them out...his one and only answer was NO, NO, NO...AND he toyed with NOP, NAH etc.

I was sooo mad...finally we were watching the latest Indian movie and the the main female charecter was called Zaara....I said to DH....how about it? He thought about it and said Yah ok!!

I am going to have the same battle with DH again with this one. After the 18th (fingers Crossed) I will start looking at names and then throw them out the window...DH likes Ishant (boy)....I hate it!

Kids can be so cruel when it comes to teasing and playing on other kids names. I cant remember being teased with my name, Catherine, but I do remember teasing my sister a lot with her name, Kelly. It was always, Kelly-jelly, smelly-kelly etc. It always worked to make her mad, but laugh at the same time!

Jayden is my nephews name.. I liked the name Jayde for a girl, but it's too close so we decided against it LOL

Decided for something a bit more unique.. not so common in schools etc although I used to get called 'Anikka the Sneaker' @ school

My DH and I had trouble finding a girls name not sure why we didnt with the boy names we just both heard Jayden and loved it straight away, we settled with:

Jayden (boy)
Paige (girl)

Once we know what we are having we can sort out the middle names.

We took the easy option and are naming the boys after their grandfathers and dad. That takes care of their middle names. We have so much differculty with choosing boys names. Every one I like ends up being a name of DH's relatives. He likes names that dont go with our surname or have the same initials as another name we have chosen.

We want different names that are easier to spell and again dont get teased or twisted to much.

We chose Levi Michael for our first son's, Michael after the grandfather and Levi was going to be named that whether he was a girl or boy. Already he has been nicknamed "Leeves" by an uncle, but it kind of suits him and only the uncle is allowed to call him that.

So for these twins, that rules out any names starting with "L" and we need to find names that are similar style to Levi.

So far we have settled on Jordan Terence and Marshall Bryan. Im fixed on Jordan and we have settled on Marshall although Im open to changes on that one. Again middle names are Terence, after their dad, and Bryan after a grandfather. At the moment, we cant decide on which name belongs to which twin so we call them "Twin A" and "Twin B" to coincide with their medical records so far. Weird I know but at least we can identify them separately so far.

All the names on my side of the family are traditional English names and all the names on my partners are traditional Indian names.

We'll be having something Indian that's easy to pronounce and able to be shortened to something Englishy (mainly so both sets of great -grandparents can say the poor mites name lol)

I am having name issues. I am pregnant with my 3rd baby and haven't found out the gender for any of them. This is the first time I am really wishing I had found out so we can be better with names. My second was a boy and we really struggled with his name and ended up with a compromise that we didn't LOVE. It is important to me to have something we really love this time but are struggling with boys names....again. Anyone know good ways to figure out what you're having. hehe.... sadly I find myself in love with long names - which combined with DF's surname (B____-C_____) Is a bit long-winded. My poor little boy... he has 28 characters in his name And only one middle name.

We don't want flavour of the year names either, and due to our surname want something that is easy to spell/pronounce.

Before I left the UK I had heard of a Buddy, Barnaby and loads of Sonny's. (i know it doesnt begin with B!)

Names are just soooooooooooooo difficult to choose for some people (me included) arn't they!

I thought that with a surname with one sylabal (dont know if that's how you spell it!) that it would be easy as we could have short or long names - not so likely.

I dont want a common name of the time as I want my child to be the only one in their class who has that name so if they are being spoken to/told off they know it is them - LOL. On the other hand I want a name that will suit both a young and older person and not something made up and way-out!

Even before we knew we were having twins, we had our fav boy and girl names picked.
The difficulty started when we found out it was 2 girls! haha!

Isla is a lovely name. I've met a swedish girl named that before who pronounced 'ee-la'


Also it's funny how different accents pronounce things different.

Thanks! We found choosing a boys name incredibly hard,..luckily the scan was right and we had a girl! I have the oposite problem really - I find boys names alot easier. Girls names seem easier to chose than boys.

After being one of 6 Kelly's in one of my classes in 6th form,..I declared I would never name my child a common name. But I always liked names that you can link the first letter with the rest of the name when you write it,...and ones that are easily pronounced by how they are written,....but when we found the name Isla in a baby book, we both instantly fell in love with it! Mae is just because it flows so well with Isla,..and we chose to not spell it May becuase we thought that spelling looks like its a family name, and it isnt.
Already loads of people get it wrong, but I hope Isla wont hate us for it, but will love her name as much as we do!

I like names that are simple and not too common. We both loved Gemma and she has Katherine as a middle name. Cameron was alot tougher. I was sure I was having a boy and we couldn't agree on boys names. Dh wanted Tom but I knew soooo many Toms or Thomases!! I wanted Cameron, dh didn't like it. I finally got my way by telling him 5 minutes after Cam was born that that was what I wanted to call him.....hehehe. He picked James for the middle name. So Cameron James. Then we move to NZ and every other boy seems to be Cameron. *sigh*
We've got a girls name sorted for the next one but struggle with boys names.

edited to add that I love those Irish names esp Aoife. And, lets face it, most of us have to spell our names from time to time....I'm Deborah (not Debra hehe), I have to spell it all the time.

When me and my parter found out we we were having a bub, we each wrote names we liked boys and girls, and at the 22 week scan when we found we were having a wee girl, the name Faith stuck and it suits her to a tee!!! I always get asked how to spell my name lol, its Sheena, and I have people spelling it Shina or shena lol and my tutor at course would call me Shena and not Sheena, grrrr it annoyed me so much.

It took us a while to figure out Cadens name, but we are happy with our choice and you cant really make fun of his name, I got called "Sheena Ribena" at school I used to cry lol now my family call me Sheeny weeny! lol, thats my dads nickname for me. I think you need to not only look at baby name books, but look at movie characters, book characters to get your inspiration to name your little person

Conor Alexander - Conor from The Highlander, Alexander is my grandad's middle name.

Nyah Zoe - Nyah Thandie Newton's character in Mission Impossible 2. Zoe was a name DH really liked, found it in the baby book. I have to say though, that we have no idea where Nyah comes from, we've googled and it comes up with different origins.

Cooper Wade - Huge league fans in our house. Cooper Cronk, is a league player for Melbourne Storm. Wade Mckinnon is a player for the Warriors. I wanted Cooper regardless, DH chose Wade. We both liked Nixon too.

lol my sisters partner is irish his last name is Binks She won't be naming any children with the first letter 'J'.

I get asked how to spell my name (Alia) all the time. I do really like it though. I'm named after a character in the sci-fi series Dune. Darragh is one of my fav boys names. Either spelled that way or as Daire. Not sure which one would cause more confusion here
We've girls coming this time round so are currently going towards : Ciara (Keira) , Eimear/Emer (Ee-mer) or Aoife (ee-fa)


I have friends who names their daughter Nuala (Nu-la). The poor girls gets called 'Nu-ala the Koala' in school.


Also I always have difficulty spelling my name to anyone. It's a pretty basic name however I've got 3 'r's in the first and second name.

I pronounce 'r' as 'or' whereas kiwis pronounce 'r' as 'ar'

i think in terms of pronouncing its mostly adults..kids will just say whatever you tell them..adults are a bit thick(take me today) and if they dont know they should ask and practice:) !

Some people are just daft... And they wonder why I dropped the Finnegan part of my surname.

I too anm Irish and I too loved the name Niamh... DF? Not so much... Which then meant that Eabha (Ava/Eva) was outta the question also.

My little sister (she's one and FREAKING adorable, hehehe) is named ZsaZsa, so will be interesting to see what kind of troubles she has with that one. serenity happened when i gave blood the other day..i just looked at her like what? F-O-X!!!! my old last name was Whiteside and got asked a million times 4 that too!

I am part Italian and have an Italian surname which the kids won't be getting so I really wanted Marco for Jack and so almost got it but Ben changed his mind Caprece is Italian tho

Jacks middle name is my Dads first name and Capreces middle name is my mums middle name (her first name didn't sound right). We named them after my parents because they have been so helpful and always there for us.

i think ive commented on this topic before but here goes:) my name is Kerri-Anne.. sounds easy but no..i spell it every time i go somewhere and while it never used to annoy me it really pisses me off now:)!

everyone tries to shorten it or say it like it's two separate names..so...for this reason..and the reason i have family members called Storm, Drey, Jasper and Tiger and Octavia:)! we personally chose names that were easy to spell and caused less teasing.. out of those 5, 3 get teased a lot and the other two love their names..so each to their own i guess but i just figure at Tiger's 21st(which isn't far away) it will sound very bizarre.. esp as his middle name is unusual too:) so we went common..Ethan or Georgia and although some people don't like them we are happy..
