It was successful, but unfortunately due to it being 5 years since the original vasectomy, his body thought the sperm was 'disease' and created antibodies to fight the disease, hence killing off the sperm. We did IVF in the end and that was successful. But if it's not long since your DH had the op it has a high chance of being successful. Good luck!

    Author: ItchyFeet
Subject: 13840
Posted: 24 January 2008 at 8:10pm

We were lucky in some ways that we stored samples before the vasectomy. I wanted some extra insurance just in case I changed my mind. Unfortunately it was only later that we discovered that we hadn't stored as much as we thought, so we only have enough for 2 attempts at IUI and maybe a little for IVF. Therefore, even with pre-existing motility and count issues, it's still worth trying for a reversal, and leaving IVF for later. A successful reversal at least gives us less problems for undergoing IVF. However this means we're facing paying for both a reversal and probably IVF. The current storage cost is $180 per year, so not a lot in the scheme of things.

Fingers crossed purpledragon and catie, it all sounds very promising!

What I'm trying to say is that our backup option hasn't turned out to be very promising for us, but I would still recommend it to anyone thinking of having a vasectomy. Sorry that's not much help to you now mum2paris, but maybe it could help someone else knowing it's an option.

I think the thing that made the difference was 3 supplements from the health shop:
Co-Enzyme Q10
L-Arginine
L-Carnitine
I did some research in the medical journals, and research has shown an increase to normal levels in serverely infertile men after 6 months on Carnitine. It's quite hard to get though, and quite expensive. The cheapest I could fins is Red8 brand, which costs $38 for 50 caps - basically a months supply. But he's been on other supplements for ages, and although things had improved a little, this big difference has only come about since he's been taking these. So maybe the $5k was worth it after all - and he had his vasectomy done at age 24 and reversed 20 years later.

So you just never know. Also you generally have to keep handing in samples to get tested until they are back to normal.

So we're having IUI in the next few days. The surgeon did say though, that the longer the time between the ectomy and the reversal the less likely the chances of success, and it had been many years for DH.
Re the sperm wash thing, that also (I believe) requires IUI (about $700 per cycle, if not puclicly funded) or IVF.

    Author: purpledragon
Subject: 13840
Posted: 23 January 2008 at 7:20am

Hi Mum2Paris
Yes my hubby had a reversal last March.
His Reversal cost just over $5000,I am pretty sure it can be less, just depends on where you go.
You sound like me last year, lol.
Any way his only cost so much as he had to stay in over night as they had to deal with scar tissue from an operation he had when he was a child as well as the scar tissue from his vasectomy.
We had a wonderful surgeon, who said it doesn't really matter what time is between vasectomy and reversal as he has heard of people who have had 10-20yrs between V and VR and still got pregnant really easy. So it just all depends. I do know that it is recommend, which I was never told, that if hubbys swimmers don't return on their own, sometimes they need a bit of help. DH has been on vitmains and homopathic stuff to help with count and motility as it did not return on it's own.

http://www.vrsupportgroup.proboards102.com/
This is a american website, but it is really helpful for people to ask questions before and after the VR.
Also if you are a memeber of Fertility Friend, there is a group in the community thread who are all ttcing after a VR.

No we are not pregnant yet,but we alway have our fingers crossed. As hubby is motility is back to normal and we are yet to do another Swimmer sample to confirm his count again. But will do that after this cycle, hopefully I won't ,or should I say hubby won't need to,lol.
Any way if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Oh we got referred to our specialist, but our doctor, but he was the man who did the original vasectomy so we knew him well. It had only been 18mths since vasectomy so when he saw us back in,he just laughed.

The reversal - 3k - if only! Try in the $6k-$7k region. The best chances of success for reversal are in the first three years, the sooner the better. In a small percentage of reversals (about 6%) scar tissue can gradually build up over time so an initially successful reversal can in effect be useless, however, storage of sperm retrieved after the reversal is an option. Sperm starts to come back after about 6 weeks, and takes 3-8 months to come back to normal. One of the unpredictable side effects is the development of antibodies, but I think a sperm wash in the lab can take care of that problem (probably more complicated than that).

This site has good information too.
http://www.vasectomyreversal.co.nz/

Our doctor recommends a week off work as well because it is a general anaesthetic and just in case
