I brought the food trays from Baby City - I think $20 for 3 trays - and they are great cause they have lids! The cubes are also a little more generous than normal ice cubes!
(e.g. spoon some out for baby into a different bowl and then freeze what was in the jar, not what is left over in the babies plate.)
I bought jars of baby food for when out and about, saved all the jars and make my own now and refill/freeze the jars... it's great! My boy seems to like homemade food better than the bought stuff! YAHOOO! :)
I'm not sure of the exact amount of time it can last. I always use mine up within a month and then make more.
I also cook porridge and brown rice (seperately) and freeze those aswell as having some fruits like bluberries etc pureed up and frozen and use those (my boy has had a dairy intolerance so it's been alot easier making my own!)
When using the ice cube tray, I cover it with some glad wrap and as soon as it's frozen put it into sealed bags so it doesn't pick up any odours from the freezer etc.!
all the best!
