I got a reply back from the car seat restaint place (very impressed on the quick reply) and they have said that so long as he fits in the seat of rear facing I can keep him that way. So happy about that, as he loves facing that way. The inlaws put him in their car today and was forward facing and he didn't like it.

CRS has a really good section on rear facing on her site Becks (if you havent already read it) It does explain that some carseats are rear facing till 9mths and what to do in that situation. It also mentions that read facing till 12mths minimum is best practice for carseat safety. This is what we promote at plunket.

I'm pretty sure that you have to go by what your car seat says. So if it says to rear face until 9kgs, once your child is over that then you need to turn them around as the seat isn't tested/safe for children over that weight limit. There is a really great website that is run by another mum on this board I think - it is NZ based and has the advice and recommendations on there - of course this is no help as I can't remember the name it.

Reccomendations are rear facing til 12mths or 12kgs which ever comes first. These are due to the strength and control of the neck and head muscles in a car accident. I m unsure Becks about Josh being able to rear face tho, call your local plunket carseat rental scheme they should be able to advise you

I had the same seat for Jack so I just took out the head insert and kept it rear facing. at the moment we just have the infant capsule which we are hiring from plunket.

However I think Megan only has a couple more months before she out grows that.

I am wanting to keep her rearfacing for as long as possible.

Gosh, Jack's seat can be rear facing until he is 16kg! Mind you he is about 10kg at 9mths so he will probably change around 1yr I think. Isn't rear facing vs forwrd facing alot to do with their ability to control their head and the strength of their neck muscles - so that if you were ever to have an accident they have more ability to hold their head and avoid really bad whiplash?

We have the same seat, i am sure that lily is now over 9kg but almost don't want to gfind out for sure as i don't want to have to change her position. I woudl be interested to know if anyone has read any studies about leaving them rear facing past the reccomended weight limit too. Well all I know is that Plunket suggest using the Car seat rear facing until your child is 12months of age! But there is no specific law regarding when to change the carseat from Rear facing to going forward!

I changed Lucas' carseat around at 8 months, his feet were touching the back seat and he kept pushing up in it...plus he was well over the 8kg mark for it to be turned around ....he was 10.5, we both prefer it going forward as I can easily see him from my rear view mirror and he knows Mummy is there! Plus we barely travel and don't go long distances so its not biggie!

Go with your gut feeling, Josh is close enough to being a year old & is well over the 9kg mark!!! You can always ask your Plunket nurse ....they usually have someone that specialises in the carseat department, that's who I spoke with and had my carseat checked over by1

I;ve just seen on my car seat that Josh is now too heavy to be rear faced. But he loves sitting that way and I would rather he sat that way as it is safer.

Is it ok to keep him rear faced even thou he is now too heavy for it??
