Thanks for all your replys.
She doesn't have any of the other symptoms mentioned thankfully. My sister talked to plunketline and they said that they aren't concerned until the 3 month check, so not to worry about it for now, especially considering she was a little early (the doc acually wrote in her notes that she appeared more like a 4 week early bub too as she had a little trouble latching for the first week etc. She has fed fine since though and packed on the weight!). But Plunket said if they are less than 3 weeks early they are considered term and tend to catch up and only be maybe a week or so (at most) behind ... she smiled at 7 weeks, so that sounds about right.

Anyway - my sis is thinking she will take her to the doc for a check on mon, as she now has reflux signs too!

Keziah is 10 weeks tomorrow and can hold her head up for short periods of time when sitting up on our shoulders or lap, but during TT she wont lift her head up much at all.. She's been holding her head up for a long time (she was 6 days late) All babies develop at different rates, so I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage.. james didnt have very good neck control until he was around 3 or 4months, mainly because we couldnt give him to long on his tummy cause of the spilling.

um briahna still wasnt great with holding her head up at 10 weeks. She would pull it up but wouldnt hold it there. She couldnt push herself up either. Wasnt really very good at it till bout 3 months. or so..

Now shes holding it up great.

My girl's head is still strengthening and she is 13wks old! She can hold her head up, but only for very short periods of time and then she droops! Also doesn't do much while having TT. She was 6wks prem, but that would make her 7wks adjusted already so is probably at a similar developmental age to your sisters baby.

Consulting the plunket and bounty books, it says that baby's head control can take up until 4mths to be stong so i haven't been concerned about my girls development. But as 3boys said - definitely get it checked out asap if your sister is still concerned. Would be better to be nothing and feel like a dork for asking than not doing anything at all and making a bad situation worse aye?

Good luck to you, will be thinking of your niece while holding my baby's head up all day as usual

Is the baby feeding ok? Many floppy babies find it hard to feed, especially BF.

I would encourage your sister to go to her GP, plunket will probably refer her there anyway. It is worth checking out just to be sure.

My first son was born floppy with all the symptoms cupptea mentions and was diagnosed with hypotonia (floppy baby syndrome), sometimes as Mel said it can resolve itself, but it is worth ruling out any underlying cause.

Their is a condition called "floppy infant syndrome" it is in one of my baby books.
Early signs are low apgar scores especially for muscle tone, nystagmus (flicking of eyes), weak sucking, drooling, poor swallowing, and low muscle tone. It is not until they are all added together that they become significant.
Basically the syndrome describes the symptoms and not the cause. Neurological test have to be done to fine that exact problem.

Sorry hope i'm not freaking you out, but at 10 weeks I think it is cause to be concerned but hopefully all will check out well.

Yeah I'd say all babies are different. Even at 2wks5d early, that's almost 3 weeks so her 'corrected' age is just over 7 weeks. My cousin was extremely floppy and we used to think something was wrong with her... she didn't start doing anything until she was 6mths. Now she's 14 and over 6ft!! I think some babies do things differently at different times... on another forum I go on, all the babies are teething and rolling over etc... Cooper is only rolling over when he's naked! Won't do it clothed...

Hmm it does seem a bit late to have a floppy head, i think most babies should be holding thier heads up at about 6 weeks ( correct me if i am wrong!)

lol Nikki, I understood what you meant to say.

I would say that is a little unusual to be floppy at that age. I know my 3 children have had reasonably good head control by that age for sure.

Is your sister concerned at all? I'd say plunket would let her know if it wasn't right. Hi everyone,
My sisters bub is 10weeks old and still seems really floppy. She can't hold her head up and although she likes tummy time and can move her head from one side to the other, she doens't do it much or lift her head up or up onto her forearms. I don't remember Jake or any of the bubs in my coffee group being floppy at this age, and the younger bubs in her coffee group are all stronger too.

Do you think there is anything wrong? Or is it normal to still be a bit floppy at this age??? Jake was stronger at two weeks old I think!!   She was 2wks5d early - but thats not considered prem so should be on track developmentally.

What do you think?
