Hey, do not all plunkets offer the solids talk? I know that each area in Aklnd does (like at the family centres at the very least), so that gives heaps of info on solids - there is one you go to around 4-6 months, then another one around 7-8 months.

I never went to the specific talk as I went to a plunket parenting coure for 6 weeks that covered it then.

ahahahahaha!!! i had to laugh cos this has been frustrating the C**P of me lately!!!!! and its great to know that Astin isnt the only one!! just an idea that worked with my son, he wasn't loving food and wouldn't eat. (didn't take to food till 8 months)
So what i did was put some food on his tray so he could feel the texture and use his hands to touch it, and squish it and throw it it is very messy... But this helped because he could feel it and it wasn't something i was trying to get into his mouth. I gave him time to exlpore, to see it. Also ate with him so he could see me eating.
Just like everyone else said... Finger food is great.

Plunket nurse suggested rice crackers, arrowroot biscuits but i found cruskits the best as they just suck them to bits.
Also: Slices of avcoado, tinned peaches, pears, mango, toast with marmite. (He doesn't like friut but it may work!!)

I never thought Luke would eat and would be on breast milk forever but one day he just took to it...It will happen, what i did was relax.... and not make it in to a food war! Because i was so stressed out about it. He was picking up on it and wouldn't open his mouth!!

I gave him a spoon this morning and he just ended up stabbing himself and me with it lol.. I don't know that I wanna do that again, he's got a fair bit of force behind his hitting and I've got the bruises to prove it lol. I'll just perservere cause it's all I can do I guess. We always had huge problems getting Gina to eat her solids up until she started crawling a few weeks ago. Now she needs the energy I guess so she'll eat them without too much fuss (well most of the time anyways) - she's also more into chunks of food ie sausage, cheese, fruit than mashed food fed with a spoon.

james does that, i find if i give him the spoon he's happy.
haleigh was the same, so could be a phase where he's trying to be independant.

toast is a good finger food for 6months, but i dont think theres an awful lot you can give them at this age esp with no teeth.
james enjoys his fresh food feeder he likes ice, carrot, banana in his.
james has a habit of getting over excited when it comes to solids time so chokes real easy which is why the fresh food feeder is great.

Depends on what he will eat I guess and how lumpy etc. What about some luncheon? You can also buy those teething rusks which are messy but good for them. Charlotte gummed to death a strawberry about Daniel's age while I held it so maybe try that (I know its fruit but you never know, he might like it). Cheese wedges are soft too so maybe try those. Yeah I had a go at mixing fruit with veges but he spat it all out even though there was only one teaspoon of fruit mixed in with 5 teaspoons of veges lol. I think hes just like me. I don't like much fruit which ppl find really weird.

DH is going food shopping today so I'm gonna get him to fetch some things that Daniel might like to munch on. What about trying some home made mouse traps with a dash of vegemite and cheese baked in the oven. New and interesting texture and flavours and you might find he really enjoys them!

I think its just a case of keep trying. And it probably is just a stage - I bet he will be back to normal in no time.

As for the fruit, what about mixing some in with his veges? we have days where he eats really well but most day he much prefers his bib or straps to his actual food.

He's still basically on the 4-6 month stuff, he's only on pureed, we tried mashed stuff (which I mashed up even more) but he didn't like it so went back to pureed. What sucks is well is that he's sooo picky.. doesn't like fruit one little bit. I try it on him every few days but it never goes down.

Rohan is the same - DH plays with him while feeding and he loves it.

I think he picks on on my frustrated moods when he flings food or blows raspberries once he has a mouthful of food!

We keep plugging away at bananas and the 4-6 month veggies pots even though he is 7 months now.

I gave up thinking it was teething as I though that for months and then missed it when his first one arrived on Xmas day!

Agree with Mummy_becks regarding 4 month food.... We keep going back to that, but its when we try introducing the chunky stuff that it all goes pear shaped again!

Hey I managed to get a jar of Parsnips, carrots and Kumara....AND a can of custard into him tonight for tea ...omg it felt great! I really worry he is losing weight!

The only things I can think of he is teething like Andrew and not show any signs of teething when the teeth come through. He maybe like Josh and want to feed himself - what about trying a sandwich?

I so feel for you as I know which plunket nurse you have and I don't think all that much of her. There is also the tough love approach, not milk until he's eaten some food, or starting back at the beginning with the 4 month stuff.

I feel for you darl, we are having the exact same problems here. On and off now and hes over 9 months. Its VERY VERY frustrating and leaves me feeling upset and wondering where i went wrong.

Agreed plunket is useless, never been there for me ...This is the first baby i have ever been around too and im a solo mummy!

At present Lucas is only eating maybe 4 spoonfuls max 3 times a day. He is surviving on breastmilk! I guess all i can do is persevere.

We have tried giving him like a couple of baby carrots to munch on but he isn't interested at all. I thought of carrots since it's his fav food. Tried banana but he wouldn't touch it lol.

yeah I think its a bit of a stage. We would hold Jacks head up with out hand to keep his head up. I keep the spoon at Capreces mouth until she swallows most of it down. I also scoop the food as it comes out and put it back in her mouth if that makes sense.

Does he have finger foods? That might help him get the food in. Another idea is give him his own spoon so hes not grabbing at it too much.

Daniel has never been a big eater but hes driving me nuts today..

He's hungry, bitching that hes hungry. He won't sit up straight so tries to eat the straps of his high chair of the side of his high chair or bumbo.. He won't open his mouth properly like he use to, slaps the spoon etc so food ends up everywhere..

When you do actually get the food in his mouth, he spits it all out in the beginning but once he swallows it once hes fine and will eat. Then he tries to eat all the food off his bib.

Is this just a stupid phase? Or am I doing something wrong??
