I'm using a bed and the couch, but at first I was sitting cross legged to help with sitting up straight. I bought a rocker off TM and have used it a bit so far - but find the couch or recliner better...

Also feeding in bed lying down works well for us, or sitting up with loads of pillows.

I think it is something you aren;t really going to be able to work out until you have a baby and try various options. We forked out for a fancy glider and it was great in those first few weeks when you're up heaps in the night, but now shes bigger she kicks the arms and it won't be long before shes too long to fit! Luckliy I'm not up feeding very often in the night anymore. We got a Freedom armchair for $16 on Trade Me for Noah's bedroom so I didn't have to go traipsing around the house to feed him in the middle of the night when he was really little. Now that he's older, we sit on there and have bedtime stories and bottle. It has a really straight back and is so super comfy. We got an old cheapo lazy boy of TM too....its lovely to rock him and cuddle him in, but a bit tricky to feed in as I am using the football hold so anything with arms is a problem for me. I sit on the sofa propped up with loads of pillows and lay him flat on a pillow too, I do the same in bed, but have to make sure I am upright enough otherwise I get a sore back.

We've got an OLD chair in Brenna's room that we still use for her last bottle of the day and she loves climbing up on it also. It's pretty basic - but the best thing is the low arms. Just enough to lean your elbow on but not so hight that it gets in the way. I used a tri pillow on the couch and this was awesome. But when I went to Mum and Dads, they have a lazy boy and this was even better. I found any chair with arms useless for feeding Ella in because she was a long baby and a kicker - she'd push her feet against the side of the chair and kick herself away from the breast.  My tripollow was great for supporting under her head at first, though.

The couch is perfect with an extra cushion behind my back! Haven't quite mastered the art in bed yet, I find I slouch too much!

I just fed Ollie in bed (he was a winter baby, so much nicer to get back into a nice warm bead in the middle of the night) or on the couch with cushions and pillows for support. I really enjoyed the proper breastfeeding chairs at Birthcare, but once we were home I just used the couch propped up with pillows for my back.
I think the low armrests (so that there's room for moving baby around) and strong back and shoulder support were what made the bf chairs so comfy.

I don't think arms would be a great idea... when babe gets longer it's hard to feed the sideways without being squished with arms. Althooo arms to rest your cup of water or tea (ermmmm not that I drank hot tea while feeding or anything ) is very handy.

same. I would recommend getting a tri pillow for when bubs is really small, they are also really good if you have a c/sec so that bubs isn't resting on or kicking the wound. Hey - Does anyone know what makes a good breastfeeding chair?

We need to get one I think, but we don't want to pay for one of those really expensive ones at the baby shops (perhaps something second hand, or just a chair from a regular furniture shop).

What sort of things should we be looking our for?

Straight back is quite important I guess. Anything else? Should it have arms? Should it be a wide chair?

We know nothing :-)
