Author: BuzzyBee
Subject: 11869
Posted: 31 October 2007 at 10:49pm

My boy is now just over 7 months and still wakes for night feeds - most nights on average 2-3 feeds. I have been feeling really sick for over the last month and to be honest I had never put it down to breastfeeding but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense. I am ALWAYS tired and sleeping at any chance I get, I find it incredibly hard to get out of bed when Lucas wakes ...I'm constantly getting chronic stomach cramping and nausea and everytime I have been to my Dr recently she has no clue as to what it could be. I still haven't menstruated since birth, i've given up thinking that maybe I am getting my period. At one stage i felt so sick for a week there I thought I must of had something seriously wrong with me.

Lucas has only just started taking solids, he is still having the 2-3 night feeds and feeding regularly during the day, but i do feel a little better and not so sickly. So maybe solids is the way to go.

I have severe allergies to several foods, peanuts/all nuts, chicken, fish & seafood & eggs. So it's probably just as well my son didn't take to his solids so well when i initially introduced them at 4.5 months.

Half the time I think Plunket don't know what they are talking about, because I kept getting told to offer solids early on & that he was ready ..but it took him up until just over a week ago to really take to them.

At Lucas' 6 month check he was still being exclusively breastfed and already weighed just over 9kg! If thats not a baby thats happy, content and thriving on just mums breastmilk then i don't know what is!

The 2 hourly feeding was a nightmare, I put up with it from about 3-6 months of age ...I figured if he was taking breastmilk it was because he needed it so i kept with it despite feeling really knackered healthwise.

I think the formula top up would be a good ideal, but that purely comes down to personal choice. I don't do formulas, espesh considering a couple have Omega 3 in them (fish oil which im allergic to) ...so im hesitant to try it on my boy. Would rather play it safe.

Sorry i know this post probably wasn't very helpful, but just thought i'd share my experiences with you and let you know you are not alone!!! I'm sure we are just few of many mums experiencing the same thing!!

Good Luck

I wouldn't start solids if she doesn't seem interested, she would probably just spit it straight out again. Does she take a dummy, or you could try offering her some water instead of the boob, not really sure of anything else to suggest when Spencer wakes at night I tend to just feed him cos its easier and quicker, have never tried just resettling him don't think it would go down to well if I did though.

I'm unsure how to try and convince her to sleep longer tho, I've tried rocking her but she will only stay asleep for about 20 mins. She mostly goes to sleep on her own but every now and then I rock her to sleep cos I don't want her grizzling to wake Jack. I emailed the sleep lady so I'll see what she has to say.

Ben had the day off yesterday so I spent the day lying around and had a few naps so am feeling heaps better today. We will be holding off for solids then cos I'm not convinced she is really ready. Author: Nikki
Subject: 11869
Posted: 29 October 2007 at 9:51pm

The current recomendation is 6 months as most babies digestive tracts are not ready before then (some are, but most aren't) and there is also an increased chance of allergies (I have a post grad nutrition qualification - the WHO research is pretty sound, they don't just make these things up) .. so I understand why you want to wait, I'm trying to hold off too. What plunket told me (Jake still wakes once a night some nights) was that it won't make them sleep through if they're not ready. If I was you I'd try what someone else suggested - one formula top up at night (or EMB) - unless you're absolutely sure she is ready for solids. At least you know formula is designed for babies under 6 months and it may help settle her for longer at night.
And look after yourself - is it possible to get someone else to do a few night feeds with either EMB or formula so you can catch up on some sleep. Your milk supply is probably dropping due to exhaustion so making her feed more frequently. I feel for you cos I have a bit of an idea of what its like - Jake was the same after surgery - and I was going crazy for a while there!!!
Big hugs!!!!

The guideline is actually 4-6mos. I tend to introduce solids around that 4m growth spurt because the 2-hourly feeding drives me crazy! and I take it as the baby's sign that they are ready for more substantial food in their tum.

Don't really want to advise anything with regards to solids as it really is up to you but as shellandbella said I would be looking for signs that she is ready and if so would probably go ahead with it. Spencer has been on solids for a couple of weeks, he only has a tiny amount 1-2 teaspoons, it hasn't really affected his feeding, he still feeds 3 hourly and had just started sleeping through before he had them but he has fallen into a more regular routine which has helped as all our days were a bit random before that.

Are you taking a good multivitamin, if you are feeling run down you might not be producing the best milk and then she feeds more you feel worse and it is one big downward spiral. I too would see the doc, if your iron is really low I think they can give you a jab which takes effect quicker than taking tablets.
Also is there anyway you can get a break, are you able to express enough for someone to take her for the evening so that you can catch up on some much needed sleep?

And I totally agree with Shellandbella if she is ready she is ready, just go with the flow, 6 months is a guideline only all babies are different. My sisters baby has only just started showing interest in solids at 12 months old whereas Spencer was interested at 3 months
Sounds like you are doing all the right things, but perhaps a check up by your GP to make sure your iron stores etc. are hunky dory might ease your mind...? As for the solids, I have no idea, sorry, does Caprece seem ready to take solids (apart from the ravenous feeding!) e.g. interested in watching you eat, has the correct reflex to take a spoon, etc.?? Alternatively you could try a top-up of formula morning and night maybe before resorting to solids...? Sometimes what you want and how things pan out aren't exactly what you plan, you just have to go with the flow, if she's ready for solids, she's ready for solids...

I make sure I have lots of snacks available to me through out the day and this seems to help. Fruit, seeds and nuts are a gerat grab and eat food.
If you are concerned that Bf-ing is taking too much of a toll on you and your body, maybe you could think about going to see your doctor??
Anyway, good luck with your decision and health

The thing is all this feeding and not much sleeping is really taking a toll on me, I'm so tired and feel really sick (like I'm guna spew) all day. I take iron pills and have a berocca to get me going in the morning and a few complan milkshakes throughout the day but I still feel like crap. I know its only for another month and a half but I can just remember how great it was once Jack started on solids.

Anyway any advice would be much appreciated
