I have only just swaddled, i saw no use for a safety sleep and so expensive! #1 was swaddled until 6mths, #2 until 12mths and #3 until 10mths, i ended up using cot sheets to wrap them. When Ella learned to stand at the cot, she couldn't get herself down again so would stand and cry.. and therefore, no sleep
Within a few months the little houdini found out how to wriggle her way out of the safety sleep and that was the end of that! Sam went through a stage of being swaddled but then got really grouchy if you even tried so we ended up just tucking her in nice and tight. The last couple of weeks she has been kicking the blankets off (darn elastic legs!) to get to the toe sucking so I have put her in a sleeping bag which I just love! nope wont safe t sleep her now and thats for sure. She likes her freedom and I will drop the cot....and we slept like that as kids so no harm there. I dont want her restricted in her sleep or dependant on it....

If you are thinking of sleeping him on his side you could try a sleep wedge. They are about $20 from baby factory. We have 2 for Daniel because we sleep him on his side because of his reflux, he won't sleep for more than an hour on his back (no matter what time of day). Tom loves to have his arms out but if he is really sleepy I can swaddle them in. The only reason I am thinking of the safety sleep is that I think we may start sleeping him on his side as he gets really bad wind /colic/ reflux (unsure which) and hates being laid flat. I swaddle and use safety sleep, although I don't use it before his dream feed as opening the velcro wakes him up. I find that even swaddled and in his safety sleep he still manages to get his arms out sometimes. we saftey sleep and swaddled until about 6 months, now we just saftey sleep, he can't sleep with out it, and soon as he enters a lighter sleep or stirs he stands up, still asleep then freaks out...quite funny really....

we still swaddle Ella and use the safety sleep as well.
