Big hugs Renee! I hope that wee Luca's problem is easily fixed. Having your little one need surgery is scary but in my (now unfortuntately very vast) experience, the staff who work with babies are also great with anxious parents and when Sienna had her surgery at 8 weeks they were quick to reassure me and to respond to any of my concerns.

I just got hold of her

He definitely has pyloric stenosis and he is having his surgery tomorrow afternoon. They are very concerned that it could be something else as well so are giving him heaps of tests at the moment.

She said he is very pale and has lost a heap of weight in the last 12 hours.

And of course with my sister being allergic to almost every kind of medication and anaesthetic, they are worried he is the same and will have to be very careful about what he is given.

So tomorrow I'll be praying for little Luca and hoping that the surgery goes well and that there is nothing else wrong.

Poor little man.

Awwww, I hope he's OK.  He's in the best place he can be, in hospital.  I hope you can get hold of her if you haven't heard anything for a while... she might really like to hear from you (hospital stays can get boring and lonely for the mums).

hope all goes well for them. easy to say try not to stress.. but hopefully alls well.

I knw how you must feel - a bit helpless (my friends baby gets rushed to hospital alot and I feel like I should do something but what?!) Just be there for her.

As for not hearing - alot of hospitals won't let you use your phone so unless she goes outside she can't use it. Is the hospital local? can you ring and ask for her - they should be able to take the phone to her.

My DH's Mum, Aunty and Uncle were all born with it and they are now in there 50's. They all had the small operation at birth and none have had any problems or symptoms since birth, so if they could fix it way back then, I am sure they have come along way since and have even better ways of correcting it!

The first signs to look for are no number 2 bowel motions. This is what I have to watch for up until 6 weeks old as this is the only way they can tell if it has developed or not!

Hope she gets some answers soon though and that its nothing to serious!

I am no doctor, but just wanted to let you know of a condition that runs in my DH's family which sounds very similar. Its called pyloric stenosis. This is when the babys stomach opening is closed off by a small peice of skin and nothing can flow through to the stomach and the baby violently vomits.

I am aware of this as there may be a possibility that our baby could be born with it, but a simple operation fixes it. It normally develops in the first 4 weeks of being born and often affects the first born baby boy in each family!

I have a feeling it might be this:

Babies face surgery by just 6 weeks' old
Each year in the UK, around 1000 babies with a condition called pyloric stenosis must have an urgent operation under general anaesthetic.


Babies with pyloric stenosis seem healthy at birth. But, by the tender age of just 3 to 6 weeks' old, their life is put in danger by severe vomiting and dehydration. This quickly becomes so bad that the babies can't keep any milk down. Without surgery, they would soon die.

Most operations are successful, though some babies suffer complications such as infected wounds.

A knowledge gap limits how doctors can help
Doctors know relatively little about pyloric stenosis, apart from the fact that the exit from the baby's stomach becomes blocked by abnormally thickened muscle.

No-one can predict which babies will develop the condition, even though it seems to run in families. Doctors can't make a diagnosis until babies are already poorly, and they rely on a surgical treatment that was first introduced in 1911.

I called my stepsister yesterday and she and her little boy Luca who is four weeks old were at the hospital where he had just been admitted.

He has been violently vomitting after every feed, is losing weight and can't keep anything down. He can't sleep at all. At first they thought he had severe colic and then reflux but it seems that it is much worse

He will have to have an IV line put in today so he can at least have some nourishment.

They have said that he might need an operation on his stomach because his digestive system has a blockage or an unexplained mass.



My sister is beside herself and I'm not sure whether to call her or not. She said she would let me know what is happening but I haven't heard.

Fingers crossed everything is ok and he won't need to have an operation.
