I'm on the fence with the clothing issue.. I don't want to freak out otherwise Ella will be going naked for a while I was born in the 80's, which is when all the Made in China products started appearing.. so I've grown up with clothes made exclusively in China (with the odd knitted jumper from Grandma ) so who knows what kind of chemicals were in my clothes?!?!

It's hard to know whether the standards in China have been slipping, or if they've always been this way - and the big companies are just pretending that they didn't know because the media has got ahold of this news. Maybe the standards have always been low, and no one wants to admit it.

Either way, I'm glad the news has become public knowledge and something might change.

I just got this email from Just Kids - interesting, I hope the rest of the baby/kids stores do something similar. Awesome to see they had their stuff for this season tested, although I'd be interested to see whether they do it every season from now on, or just while it's a hot media topic.


Formaldehyde Update
Following our website release last month, Just Kids is able to report that formaldehyde testing has now been completed on the entire Summer Launch range of Just Kids’ clothing.

As a basic background, formaldehyde may be found in either bound or free states in fabrics. The free form of formaldehyde is considered to be potentially harmful. The “textile method” test ascertains the amount of free formaldehyde in fabric, and is used internationally.

Testing of the entire Summer Launch range of Just Kids’ clothing was carried out independently using the “textile method” of testing. All tests confirmed that Just Kids clothing does not contain any traceable levels of free formaldehyde.

These results reaffirm that the approach we are taking to ensure our customers receive quality clothing is working. The outcome of these tests will give you, as our customers, a sense of reassurance and security when purchasing clothing for your children. We see these tests as a very positive initiative and pledge to continue our longstanding commitment to the matter of safety standards in children’s clothing.

I know, that's what sucks. That you have to pay more for safety.
Altho the Mokopuna stuff is reaaaally cute, my girls have the little wrap dresses and leggings
Oh and I told a slight fib, it's not NZ made, they manufacture the garments in China but the fabric is NZ made and they have the PH levels of everything checked to make sure they are within safe ranges. I was quite shocked today - I walked around the Warehouse and couldnt find a single thing (towels, sheets, blankets, clothes, underwear etc) that WASNT made in China. Then popped into the baby factory and a similar thing there - all the merino woolen singlets were made in China too.

Fundamentally I am opposed to buying products that are potentially unsafe and I have always had a "thing" about buying chinese made products (am a BIG advocate of basic human rights!!!) - but realised sometime ago that unless I win lotto then I dont have an awful lot of choice.

I just cant seem to find a cost effective way to buy kiwi-made when chinese made products are so much cheaper and more accessable.

i feel the same way, i feel like i should be taking notice of this wakeup call, but dont know how to do that. do i search for NZ made manufacturers, and ask them if they fabric used is sourced from overseas or made in nz - and pay the increased price for those items, or do i suck it up and wash wash wash the clothes and pretend it is enough.

I don't know what to do about this either I feel like we should be able to trust what is imported (in large) to NZ, but I dunno how the Government (or anyone) could even start to try to regulate that! So much of our day to day stuff has had something to do with China....

Not necessarily - our merino wool is often sent overseas to be made into garments.

What makes it even harder is that if you buy food that says Made in NZ, a lot then also say made with local and imported products, so no idea where it came from. And clothing may be made here but fabric from elsewhere. The stories have def made me re-evaluate things. I'm going to be more careful buying toys in the future and I think when the next bub arrives I'll buy some organic cotton and merino to wear while newborn. We have heaps of PP stuff (not that cheap either) and of course that's made in China too!!! it HAS made me think about the products and clothes i buy for the girls. but the problem is, of course i would love to buy new zealand made clothing, but the cost!!! compared to imported stuff, there is a big difference.

what childrens wear IS made in nz, from nz made fabric? i imagine that a lot of what is made in nz would be using imported fabric.

i will be following this news story with interest, as i am already starting to get concerned with the imported food issues. maybe its time to go hippy??? I agree, Liz. Both my kids have dry skin/rash/exzema and now, I can't help but think???
I have to say, though, that there was an episode of NCIS or CSI or something a while back that had all these girls sick, and one died, maybe? because of sprays on some jeans they were all wearing. making any changes to the way you shop?

Just read on stuff that two boys were injured when their "low flame risk" pjs caught fire - the same brand that Jake and taine wear. And with that formaldehyde stuff in the clothing - not even Kiwimade clothing was exempt. I'm feeling a little bit like "what the hell?" no idea what to buy that is safe. taine has had a rsah on his back pretty much since birth that comes and goes. i've always put it down to asthma, but what if its the clothes?

I think that some oif this may be scaremongering, but it hits in a place where people aren't always necessarily rational - their kids.
