Topic: 5 month waking at 5am Posted: 02 September 2010 at 12:18pm |
Help... my five month old had been sleeping from 8pm till 7am, but has just started waking at 4.30am and rolling in his cot to play with toys !!
He seems to be wide awake and ready to play. Should I remove the toys from his cot?? He use to wake at 7am and play with them but 4 is too early.
He has just started solids, and currently goes down around 8pm then dreamfeed at 10pm. Over all has around 6 hrs sleep during the day and 5-6 bottles.
He is very active all the time and has been since born, he is also trying to crawl.
Any suggestions??

Its most likely a developmental thing and nothing to do with how much u are feeding him or anything u can change! In our Jan 2010 thread almost all the babies starting waking more than usual at night - wether they were bottle or breast fed, on solids or not!
Babies all sleep different ammounts, just like we do. They go to bed at differnt times and wake at differnt times of the monring, than each other too. They are not all going to be 7-7sleeps! Weve been getting up by 6am for almsot 4 yrs now! Nothing Ive done or not done has changed this,...and the best thing we did that really helped was to accept it! They also change ALL THE TIME! I doubt that he will keep waking so early for very long!
I did all sorts of CC and CIO with my DD, and nothing every worked for long, she slepft through on her won at 21 mths. DS was sleeping 6-8hr stretches early on, then for a few months wet back to 2-3hrly feeds at night, and the last 2 nights has gone 7 hrs between feeds - Ive done nothing but relax and leave it up to him!
Remember- this too shall pass!

Does he wake during the night? Could it be that he is waking because he is hungry?
Could be a developmental thing or maybe a growth spurt too?
Agree with above poster too.

I thought it might be that he is hungry, but he won't take anything.
Think I am going to have to ride it out and hope he grows out of it.
The worest of it is that he rolls onto his tummy gets stuck then starts crying, but everytime I put him on his back he does it again.... he is also in a bag !

My DS did this too at a slightly older age- I think it was to do with rolling over and getting stuck so I used to quickly go in and flip him back over and leg it out again! It passed fairly quickly.
I personally would keep toys out of the cot (other than a comforter or teddy) but perhaps they are irrelevant in his waking time and he is stirring for other reasons (birds, light, hunger).
They go through stages and come back out of them again just as quickly. My DS went through a stage of waking to chatter twice a night but that passed too. And when he was about 11 months he would wake and whimper a bit at around 4am but after a night or two of leaving him (as he wasn't showing any distress) it stopped.
Hope this phase passes soon for you!

I would look at his daytime sleeps, either two much or not enough. Probably needs around 3 sleeps of at least on hour (dam hard to get long enough naps tho grggh). Maybe also see if you can get a slightly earlier bedtime at night - adjusting this has worked well for us and we had some terriable wakes up early.

Have you got a safety sleep wrap? We pulled ours out once our Son started rolling over as he would do the same and cry as he couldn't get back. We also took most of his toys out of his cot and that helped him. Goodluck, I'm sure it'll pass soon.
