Topic: 1st Birthday Ideas Posted: 17 July 2008 at 4:16pm |
Keziah is turning 1 in a few short months... (3 months and 7 days to be exact) and I really need some help as I have never done a birthday party myself before as I'm sure some of you hadn't before either...
What did you all do for your child's very 1st Birthday?
What kind of cake did you have? Did you make it? (post pics if you can)

We just had a lunch with friends and family. Didn't really do anything major as he's too young to really understand, he liked having lots of new toys to play with lol
I made him a mickey mouse cake which I was very proud of for my first ever attempt at cake making and decorating!

we were in japan and were also leaving to move back to nz, so it was a combined farewell/birthday party. made own food and just sat around chatting really. jake and his mate Ayaka played with his buzzy bee. made a truck cake from the Aussie woman'sm weekly book
With taine we were living in a small community - packed with relations, and had a huge backyard. Taine's birthday is in summer. We had a huge party with everyone from playcentre. played in the pool and with the water slide. taine sat under the table eating cake. Had a tractor cake I made.

for ellas actual birthday we took her to the Zoo and then had a family dinner at the grandparents.
In the weekend we had her birthday party at home for close family and friends with kids. Ella had a ball and totally knew that the party was for her. DH & I made the cake (I baked it and he decorated it).
Here is a pic of the cake

Lovely, thanks for the ideas ladies.. I'm beginning to think I might hold out on the big parties until she's a bit older!! We might just make it a family affair and invite a couple of her 'friends'... but have the grandies (well my mum, raoul's mum and great grandma) Still I would like her to have a cake so I'm still searching for ideas
Gorgeous Cake btw, and man Miss Ella is cute!!!!! I'm not talented enough (more I lack the patience) to make a cake LOL but luckily my MIL is a chef and is really good at cakes so might give me a hand in that department

I had Caitlyns birthday party in the church hall where play group is held, which was great cos we could get the slides etc out .
She had quite a few friends there, and so did i (i saw it as a celebration for me making it to a year without killing her )
Her cake i bought , it was just an icecream one.
The parties shes going to remember i've put more effort into , particularly her 5th
But there are plenty of ways to make the first birthday extra special,im sure you'll think of a great one
And you can write her her first birthday letter the night before, like i've done for the past six years , for her to open on her 21st :-)

I am looking forward to Phoenix turning one. My parents run a cake business (mainly supermarket stuff) but Mum was always awesome at making our birthday cakes (from the Australian Women's Weekly) and this time it will be no different, I will be hitting her up for help.
As Phoenix turns 1 on Jan 4th, it may be difficult to celebrate due to everyone being away, so I am sure it will be delayed a lil this year.

We took the lazy option and met friends and McDonalds. I baked a cake, iced it and decorated it with sprinkles. I'll save the hard work for when he's old enough to appreciate it.

Im having a small party at my house. Family, friends and their kids. Its a theme party and im making the cake (first try, hope it doesnt look too bad! lol!). Im not going all out really, just a few nibbles and your usual party food. Need to go buy balloons and streamers etc.
Good luck! I know ive had fun planning her party :)

Hi I'm new but I was googling and went right through signing up just so I could post on here! haha
My son's first birthday is now only a week away but I'v been planning for months. I slightly tend to disagree with the whole "they'll never remember it so who cares" kind of thing because I'm only 20 but I can tell you now I don't remember even one of my birthdays! You can't guarentee what they will remember but you can certainly hope that they will enjoy it at the time.
For food I'm having things like fruit kebabs, sandwiches cut with a cookie cutter to make them more festive, cocktail sausages, fish fingers, sausage rolls, those potato pom pom's and savouries etc. generally nice and healthy for the lil ones.
For his cake its just a giant one with blocks on tha end spelling his name but i was in no way going to attempt that so I'm having it made.
For the lil ones because theres a lot we went right through from antenatal together we're just letting them have free play in his room because it has a gate with supervision also a bubble machine as something exciting for them its so easy and babies love lil things like that!
But my best tips would be try to make it really relaxd I've hired highchairs for the lil ones that will be eating from plunket for only $5 each for the weekend so that you dont have to worry to much about mess parents can set them up with food and they're going to be ohk not running around. I brought cheap sippy cups for each lil one and just printed out their name and glued it on with ribbon thats going around his cake so its all tied in!
I'm also having a guest book that i hope everyone will write in this birthday and all his other big ones like his 5th etc. to keep safe and give to him on his 21st because some of those people may not be around by then! I'v made a dvd disc with his photos from his first year on it to it was really easy (literally 3mins) to burn them all on to dvd and its a nice thing to have in the background.
My best advice pick a theme it doesnt mean you have to go all out but atleast then you've got some direction for a cake or decorations and things then you're in control of how much of a theme you really use!
Hope this helps its only some of my sons birthday but the best I can really remember for now!

we are just having family over for my daughter's first birthday most likely be a bbq lunch. We are going to give her a cake to demolish as well as have an actual cake for the adults (and her 2 cousins ) to eat.
My antenatal group is having a combined birthday party in between the babies birthdays (first baby was born 21 October and last babies were born 24 November) lucky there is one weekend where it doesn't fall closest to an actual birthday.

We had a bbq lunch on a sunday for close family and friends. It wa in march so it was summer it was a wonderful day. I work in a childcare centre so i borrowed the small table and chairs for the little ones. Went to the toy library and hired see saw, little cars, slide and we had a swing. So there was lots to do for the 1 year olds.
Food we had: Pizza, chicken nuggets, cocktail sausages, watermelon, friut. That was heaps for the kids. For us we had the typicla kiwi bbq.
My friend made a teddy bear cake it looked awesome!
it was pretty low key but heaps of fun in the end about 45 people came which seems like a lot but wasn't really. Luke had such a good time he especially liked the toys i had hired.
Good luck the beast advice i can give is have all the food made even the fairy bread i didn't make it before hand as i didn't want it to dry out but in teh end ran out of time to make it !!
Have fun!
