Topic: 1 week weight loss?? Posted: 26 December 2007 at 6:37pm |
hi, im worried my daughter lost 400grms in her first week and has only gained back 20grms after 5 days she is gettin weighed again for her 2week check if she doesnt put her birth weight back on they will put her in hospital :( has anyone ever experianced this sorta thing? im freaking out my other daughter was fine and drank lots this time around babys just not interested takes me an hour to 2 hours to get 50mls of formula into her then she will rest and want snack feeds which the midwife told me not to give her to make her drink the 50mls faster and better every 3 hours ?? i thought the idea was to get more into her? extremely worried any advice or experiances would be very helpful.
Have even tried different bottles and teats, changed formulas after the first one made her to constipated. At the moment i have to use a flannel to keep her awake yet it still takes ages shes just not interested like has no energy.
Thanks heaps
Jess

Yay something I feel completely experienced to help with!
Daniel was born at 3.5kg.. he lost 500g in the first week due to feeding issues.
I had a great lactation consultant (she was my friends aunt) who gave me a great strategy to get him feeding. The no energy is from lack of feeding and lack of feeding leads to no energy, its a horrible cycle that needs to be broken.
I was made to feed Daniel every 2 hrs for 2 days to build his energy up, this was day and night. It's very tiring though. After those 2 days I then went on to feed every 2.5-3hrs during the day and whatever he wanted at night, after about 10 days he was gaining weight steadily.
If she really doesn't want the bottle, try cup feeding her. Like the medula cups, they hold about 50 mls from memory, we used this in the beginning. Giving him about 3-5mls at a time. You'll probably find that the bottle is such hard work when she has no energy, but a cup would mean all she has to do is swallow.
Hope that helps a bit.

Hi there thanks italia and kebakat:)
Were would i find medula cups or if i put a nick in a teat would that work the same?? keen on giving the 2 hour set up a try but would it be the 50mls every 2 hours or less?? i soooo dont want them to put a tube in her that would be so painful for her so will try anything.
thanks again much appreciated :D

You can get them from chemists. I've seen them in our crappy local chemist anyway. Otherwise try baby factory etc. They are like a medicine cup. I'd give 50mls every 2hrs, she might not swallow it all at first but she'll get there. Hopefully she will take it all for you .. if she isn't keen on a cup though the other option is a dropper but that would be even slower.

Maybe you could take her to the plunket centre place, they might be able to help you or at least give you a break.

YAY thanks soooooooooo much since my post and your replys i cut a larger hole in the teat of her bottle so give her a better flow so if she doesnt have the energy then all she needed to do was swallow and feed her every 2 hours its brilliant shes now taking 80mls per feed taking 30mins max to feed her and it more content and sleeping through the night pretty much, she got weighed today if she had only gained 100grms she was going to get admitted aparently, but she gained 220grams! YAY!! Midwife was happy as and thinks she will just keep gainning now. Thank you all sooooo much for your advice :D I got my happy little baby back :D

Well done Jess Now that she is feeding more she will probably have more energy to feed, and the cycle will continue IYKWIM. Hope she keeps gaining well.
