How do I solve this problem...

Daniel currently has 2 day sleeps, usually at 10:30am and then again at 2:30-3pm. He use to sleep for over an hour for both of these..

Lately though hes sat around talking in his cot for a good half hour or more and then gets bitchy.

Going by that you would think that maybe he only needs 1 day sleep now. Since hes not going to sleep when I pop him down.

BUT..

If I only give him 1 day sleep hes irritable and a right grumpy ass. Rubbing his eyes like crazy and yawning. And nearly always when he goes down he will wake himself up by pooping his nappy and then refuses to go to sleep after a nappy change.

Should I stick with 1 or 2 day sleeps?

If 2 I'll just keep doing his bedtime routine and just hope he figures out again to go to sleep

TIA

Hmmm, not sure. We went to 1 at 14 months but heaps of kids go to 1 at around 11 months. Maybe try pushing the morning nap back gradually and just offer a shorter afternoon nap if he needs it. If he is resisting his morning nap, it probably means he needs more awake time.

I think some degree of grumpiness is inevitable with the 2 to 1 naps switch. It is very common for kids to just to one 40min nap at the start of the switch but it eventually lengthens out in most cases.

Also, be aware that it often takes a while for them to settle into 1 so you may have 1 some days and 2 other days...possibly for a couple of months.

how about just letting him chill out in his cot for one of the sleeps. Not quite a sleep but more a rest.

Josh still has 2 sleeps every now and then. If he only has his morning sleep then it is an early bed time for him.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Tomorrow I might try putting him down at 11 and see if he goes down without all the talking. I'd like him to keep to 2 day sleeps because he seems to need it. He's a much happier child when he gets those 2 sleeps.
